Presenting the Katapult Ocean 2024 wave 🌊 FLOCEAN Flocean harvests fresh water from the deep ocean, eliminating chemical use & toxic brine while cutting energy consumption in half. Why we invested The world faces a growing clean water shortage, with demand expected to exceed supply by 40% by 2030. Poor water quality causes 80% of diseases in developing nations, and shrinking aquifers are a global issue, affecting agriculture even in developed countries. The desalination market is set to grow from $17B to $33B by 2030, but traditional seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) systems are costly, inefficient, and harmful to the environment. The Flocean desalination system uses clean, pressurized deep ocean water to cut energy use by 30-50%. Their modular, low-cost subsea desalination system is easy to install and maintain, with minimal environmental impact. Presenting the Katapult Ocean 2024 wave 🌊 Waterwhelm Lowest-ever rate of electricity consumption for desalination and water reuse. Why we invested The world faces a growing clean water shortage, with demand expected to exceed supply by 40% by 2030. Poor water quality causes 80% of diseases in developing nations. Desalination and water reuse are promising solutions but come with high costs due to energy-intensive reverse osmosis (RO) systems. Waterwhelm addresses this with a highly efficient forward osmosis (FO) technology, using waste heat to significantly reduce electricity use and CO2 emissions. Compared to RO, Waterwhelm's FO consumes 80% less electricity, emits 79% less CO2, and cuts CAPEX by 35% and OPEX by 50%. Their system has been validated by major global water companies. Why we invested Around 80% of the ocean remains unmonitored, leaving valuable marine data uncollected. Key challenges include the high cost of scientific vessels ($50-100k/day), safety risks for crews, and environmental damage from vessel emissions and noise. USVs (unmanned surface vehicles) offer a solution, but they face challenges such as difficult control and limited operational areas. Open Ocean Robotics aims to overcome these issues with an affordable, sustainable, versatile USV equipped with sensor suites, capable of handling various sea states and long missions, making ocean data collection more accessible.
