In 2002, Afghanistan had just 300 trained midwives for a population of 40 million. Women gave birth without medical support, and maternal mortality rates were among the highest in the world. Thanks to the efforts of many dedicated professionals, midwife education programs have trained over 10,000 midwives, drastically improving maternal health. In this special International Women’s Day episode of the One Million Lives Podcast, we speak with Trude Thommesen, a Midwife and Clinical Supervisor at Stavanger University Hospital, who was part of a collaborative effort to strengthen midwife education in Afghanistan. Trude shares how simulation-based training, community-led initiatives, and local recruitment helped bring life-saving care to rural areas—empowering women and improving healthcare access despite ongoing challenges. 🎧 Listen to our brand-new podcast episode now wherever you get your podcasts, or visit www.laerdal.com/podcast
