Welcome to Maria Dusinska's Fritz Sobel award lecture 🗓️ 26th of March, 12:00 The Fritz Sobel award recognizes outstanding contributions to the field of environmental mutagenesis. 🏅 The price is given by the European Environmental Mutagenicity and Genomics Society (#EEMGS) This Wednesday we will gather in NILUs headquarters at Kjeller, Norway to celebrate Maria and this great achievement, together with those joining online. 🙌 👩🔬 It was easy to get a YES from Maria when we asked her to jump on a plane to give her talk. Generous as she always is she will travel to Norway simply for this occasion! 👩🔬 Maria Dusinska has been affiliated to The Climate and Environment Institute NILU for many years and was instrumental to the founding of our Health Effects Laboratory. 🔬 We hope especially to be joined by many colleagues in the Nordic and Baltic countries. We are in the process of establishing a Nordic/Baltic regional society of EEMGS, called Nord-EEMGS. With this we hope to strengthen the Nordic/Baltic scientific cooperation within the fields of Environmental Mutagenesis and Genomics, and increase the visibility of scientific advances and research in our region. 🧑🔬👨🏻🔬👩🏽🔬 https://lnkd.in/dnHwUWeC #FritzSobels #NordEEMGS #EnvironmentalMutagenesis

'The scientists are coming!' It sounds almost like a kitschy horror movie from the eighties, 🧟♀️ but it's far from that. 'Forskerne kommer' is an outreach event arranged by the Framsenteret Fram Centre during the National Science Week, where scientists tour Northern Norway to talk about what they are currently working on. 👨🔬 👩🔬 Environmental chemist and NILU scientist Linda Hanssen has participated four times. According to her, “the main thing for me is that we get out of our premises in Tromsø and engage pupils at other locations in northernmost Norway. A lot of exciting research gets done outside the universities, and it’s important to talk to people about that as well. Besides, practice makes perfect, and we get better at science outreach by actually talking and using figures rather than just reading aloud from a list of bulleted items. Being on tour in autumn can be magical. The scenery is stunning, and maybe you’ll get to places you’ve never been before.” 😍 Read more in the 14th edition of #FramForum, published today! https://lnkd.in/dJWZ-KB7

Is it possible to analyze snow for pollutants without using other harmful substances? ❄️ ⚗️ Project leader and NILU scientist Cleo Davie-Martin thinks so. In the Framsenteret Fram Centre-financed project DUMP, they use the new ‘green chemistry’ method for their analysis of traffic-polluted snow. The method is based on a thermal desorption technology that uses rapid heat to directly release the compounds of interest from the surface of a sample matrix into the gas phase for analysis.
#innovasjon #forskning #Forsvar #beredskap #samarbeid #Kjeller

Fires in tropical forests affects not only the forest, but also the carbon cycle and air quality. A new study reveals that exactly what burns – and at what temperature – strongly influences the emissions from such fires. “It is common to use satellites to monitor vegetation fires. They can observe either the heat radiation while the fire is burning, or the burned area afterwards. From either the heat radiation, or the size of the burned area and additional estimates of fuel availability, we know the amount of biomass burned. Then we can also find out how much CO, CO2 and other chemical substances the fires have emitted,” explains senior scientist Dr Johannes Kaiser at NILU. https://lnkd.in/dRd4gPiC ScienceNorway.no #wildfire
