Underwater Archaeology: Recovering a Lost World War II Airplane Wreck from the Lakebed During World War II, a massive air battle unfolded over Hungary, resulting in the loss of several Hungarian pilots, including Corporal Sándor Beregszászi, whose Messerschmitt fighter crashed into Lake Balaton. In September 2020, as part of a military exercise, Hungarian Defense Forces divers located the wreckage submerged under mud. The aircraft, a Hungarian-made Messerschmitt Me 109G6, is historically significant, as no other surviving examples are known. After years of preparation, in October 2023, the Military History Institute and Museum of the (Hungarian) Ministry of Defense -, the HDF General Staff arranged for the preparation of the recovery of the wreckage. NORBIT supported the major recovery operation with multibeam sonar systems. During the operation, key components of the plane, including the propeller hub, weapons, engine, and fuselage sections, were retrieved. These finds confirmed the plane's identity, offering a vital connection to Hungary's WWII military and industrial history. New Case Study: Shipwreck and Quay Wall Survey with WINGHEAD i79h Sonar System As part of the NORBIT Partner Training Program, a field survey was conducted in Tanjung Priok, Jakarta Bay, on August 29, 2024, using the NORBIT WINGHEAD i79h multibeam sonar. The survey focused on a submerged wreck and a sedimented quay wall. The installation and setup, using the portable NORBIT PORTUS Pole, were completed in just over an hour. The shipwreck was located two nautical miles northeast of the port at a depth of less than 10 meters. The quay wall, built in 2014, exhibited significant sediment accumulation at its base. #norbit #exploremore #winghead

Live feed from Lake Superior, where researchers search for a missing airplane. A high-tech uncrewed Ocean Infinity ASV equipped with a NORBIT WINGHEAD multibeam sonar and cameras is attempting to solve the mystery of a 1968 plane crash that killed three people during a scientific mission in Western Lake Superior. For decades, seat cushions and pieces of metal have washed ashore, but the wreckage of the Beechcraft Queen Air and the remains of the three men have never been found in waters reaching depths of 400 feet (122 meters). On Monday, an autonomous vessel called the Armada 8 was deployed in Lake Superior. The ASV was accompanied by boats and crew from Michigan Tech University’s Great Lakes Research Center in Houghton, located in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, and with NORBIT personnel supporting the operations remotely. Live feed of the search can be viewed online here: https://lnkd.in/gZjhGHe6
