Call for proposals: Bioenergy Value Chain Nordisk Energiforskning invites applicants to submit their proposals for a call aiming to create synergies from working together in the biomass sectors in the Nordic and Baltic countries. The bioeconomy is a large part of our lives, based on a wide variety of biomass resources. Energy from biomass and biomass waste is part of this economy, and there is an increasing interest in the carbon itself. The Nordic and Baltic countries are leading in advanced biomass utilisation and will continue to lead in the production of green e-fuels and carbon utilisation in the green transition. The Nordics and Baltics have extensive national biomass related research programmes focusing on different national challenges, representing complementary Nordic-Baltic competencies. The Bioenergy Value Chain Programme seeks to address these challenges, through broad project partnerships analysing biomass-based value chains. How can bioenergy contribute to increasing security of supply? In what ways can we improve the bioeconomical potential? And how can we better utilise by-products and waste stream resources? The available budget for the call is NOK 4 000 000. Deadline for applications is 29 January 2025 at 13:00 (CET). Exploring the added value of Nordic research collaboration On 2–3 October, Nordisk Energiforskning held the Annual Mobility Workshop in Oslo. The workshop gathered PhD students and researchers from different fields and regions to explore the added value of Nordic research collaboration. Of particular interest were the presentations of the three projects funded within the Nordic Energy Research Mobility Programme: ● Nordic Fire and Safety Network: Focus on Energy III (NFSNergy) ● Nordic Network on Energy System Integration and Sustainable Transport (NordNET 2.0) ● Energy Informatics Academy Network Nordic (EIA Nordic) In between the sessions, we got to delve deeper into these projects, as we sat down with the project leaders to discuss their respective expertise. "It's important for PhD students to not only be with their supervisors at home, but meeting new people, building a network of their own, and getting new perspectives. Cooperation can work quite well online once you've started it, but new ideas mostly come about face to face," says Jens Weibezahn, Project Leader of NordNET 2.0 and Assistant Professor at Copenhagen School of Energy Infrastructure (CSEI). "The Nordic countries could be a frontrunner in coordinating a market framework where energy research and development is supported, and regulatory barriers removed" On 22–23 January, it's time for the Nordic Hydrogen Valleys Conference in Luleå, Sweden! Nordisk Energiforskning is proud to have Mogens Lykketoft, Chairman of the Board of Energinet, as one of our keynote speakers at the conference. He was President of the UN General Assembly when the 17 SDGs were adopted, and the Paris Climate Agreement secured. As a prelude to the conference, we had the pleasure of talking to Lykketoft about the development of a sustainable Nordic hydrogen society and its role in the green energy transition. 🌐 How can Nordic cooperation contribute to the global climate goals? – The Nordic countries could be a frontrunner in coordinating a market framework where energy research and development is supported, and regulatory barriers removed. We have good geography to supply not only ourselves, but continental Europe with green energy from both land and sea. This will demand fair models for cost-sharing of the investment in the transmission systems – including the networks anchored in energy islands in the North Sea and Baltic Sea. We could set an example for the rest of Europe by strengthening the transnational transmission networks, which is increasingly important also for balancing supply and demand in national energy systems based mainly on energy from wind and sun. ✅ How can we make it easier for planned hydrogen projects to follow through, and how can we speed up the implementation process? – The basic question is whether governments will take on the economic risk of investing in transmission networks for green hydrogen. In Denmark this means covering a major part of Jutland and connection to Germany: Infrastructure will create the demand for green hydrogen, both because investment in production of green hydrogen and power-to-X-products will be attractive, and because investment in more output from wind energy parks at sea will be encouraged. 🤝 Looking forward, how can we increase the cooperation around hydrogen and energy in the Nordics? – In the foreseeable future, highly energy-consuming industries’ consumption of fossil fuels will gradually be phased out via regulation and replaced by a considerably increased demand for green fuels. This means increased demand for Nordic coordination in creating 'cobwebs' around energy islands in both the North Sea and Baltic Sea to supply continental Europe with green energy. From a Danish perspective, a green transition will also include cooperation with and export to Germany on the direct transmission of green hydrogen in a land-based network. There is significant potential for hydrogen in the Nordics and the Arctic, but stronger incentives are needed to unlock it. On the second day of the Arctic Circle Assembly, Nordic Energy Research brought together experts to discuss hydrogen's potential in the region and the barriers to its development. H.E. Kalistat Lund, Minister for Agriculture, Self-Sufficiency, Energy, and Environment of Greenland, opened the dialogue with a speech about the potential for hydrogen in Greenland and how they are working to attract investors to the island. Sharing new statistics from the upcoming report Nordic Hydrogen Valleys, our CEO Klaus Skytte offered a sneak peek into the first-ever mapping of Nordic hydrogen value chains. With just 0.2% of the Nordic hydrogen potential in operation and only 1% currently under development, we need to work hard to make the business case and ensure long-term investment. Jón Björn Skúlason, General Manager of Icelandic New Energy, and Erla Sigríður Gestsdóttir, Head of Division and Team Leader for Energy at the Ministry of Environment, Energy, and Climate of Iceland, contributed with perspectives from industry and decision-makers. Jón Björn frankly stated that "oil is too cheap," making the business case for hydrogen weaker, and emphasised that the need for better incentives and support is crucial if the true potential is to be realised. Nordic Energy Research would like to thank all panelists and participants in yesterday's session. If you are interested in learning more about our work on hydrogen and our upcoming report Nordic Hydrogen Valleys, please visit our website: https://lnkd.in/dT5nHHau or reach out to Ole Aune Ødegård, Adviser at Nordic Energy Research. “We don’t work for the communities; we work with the communities.” If one sentence could summarise this morning’s Arctic Circle event on building sustainable energy futures in the Arctic, it might be this one by panelist Dr. Michael Ross, Industrial Research Chair in Northern Energy Innovation at the YukonU Research Centre, Canada. Cooperation between a broad range of actors and close collaboration with communities are essential to ensuring the green energy transition benefits those located far from densely populated areas. In a room filled to capacity, Dr. Ross, along with Dr. Daria Shapovalova, Director of Aberdeen University Centre for Energy Law, Scotland, and Chair of the ScAN - Scottish Arctic Network Annalise Klein, Program Architect at the Alaska Center for Energy and Power, USA, and Klaus Skytte, CEO of Nordic Energy Research, discussed how renewable energy can be rolled out in various types of communities. By sharing practices and experiences from Alaska, Canada, Scotland, and the Nordic countries, the panel offered participants valuable insights into the dos and don’ts of successful implementation. We would like to extend a big thank you to our panelists and all participants in the session. If you couldn’t attend, you can read more about Nordic Energy Research’s work with the Net Zero Island Network here: https://lnkd.in/ddrGE7hy or reach out to Ditte Stougaard Stiler who is responsible for the network at Nordic Energy Research.
