Advanced instruments for measuring movement under water

Om oss

Nortek excels in the development and manufacture of acoustic Doppler instrumentation. Doppler Velocity Logs (DVLs) are used for subsea navigation. Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (ADCPs) are used to understand physical processes in the ocean, rivers, lakes and laboratories. We pride ourselves on being innovative in product development and production processes. Nortek provides solutions to engineers and scientists by offering real-time data collection and support from our responsive technical team.

Why do ADCPs have multiple beams? ADCPs get 3D velocity profiles by using multiple slanted beams, with each beam pointing in a different direction The blue arrows in this diagram represent the water velocity, and the yellow arrows represent the velocity measured by each beam. Each ADCP beam detects motion parallel to that beam, meaning each beam measures a single component of the velocity (i.e. a one-dimensional velocity). By taking the vector measurements from at least three beams, an ADCP can add those vectors together and produce a 3-dimensional current velocity measurement. This illustration shows that concept with two beams, but at least three are required for a 3D measurement. Learn more about this concept in our ADCP guide: https://bit.ly/4eGQz2z

Have you seen our #AboutUs video? If you have, you might recognize some familiar Nortek faces. Our team at our HQ in Norway took time to show a glimpse behind the scenes of what a day at Nortek really looks like! Every Nortek instrument is made at our office outside of Oslo. Chances are, if you have a Nortek instrument, it was assembled, tested and packaged to ship by the same people you see performing those jobs in the video. To see the finished video, check out our About Us page: https://bit.ly/3YkqkcF

If you're new to taking current and wave measurements, or the oceanography world as a whole, there might be some questions you're afraid to ask. We're here to help! Maybe you're wondering how current and wave direction are defined. Currents are always given in the direction the currents are flowing 𝒕𝒐𝒘𝒂𝒓𝒅𝒔, while wave directions are always reported as the direction the waves come 𝒇𝒓𝒐𝒎. Our Support site is full of FAQs like this one that provide the groundwork when getting started in the world of ADCPs! https://bit.ly/3XYLv2r

It's been a busy fall for global Nortek events! In addition to hosting several Nortek events, we've been exhibiting at shows worldwide. Our teams enjoyed catching up with customers at Oceanology Asia in Shanghai, Oceans 2024 in Halifax, and Rio Oil and Gas in Rio. It's been great connecting with everyone and learning about the latest projects. We hope to see more of you in the near future!

We recently wrapped up an incredible Nortek Day in Qingdao, China! Packed with insightful presentations on the latest generation ADCPs and DVLs, the event provided a perfect platform for learning and collaboration. The excitement continued with Nortek VM Day, where we demonstrated our technology in action - mapping strong tidal currents and capturing impressive data during the demo. A big thank you to the Nortek China team for making it all happen. 👏

The growth of offshore renewable energy sources requires reliable scientific data of the oceanographic environment. This can range from site surveys ahead of wind farm construction to ongoing monitoring of tidal turbines. How have you seen #OceanTech in use as part of the transition to renewable energy?
