🌍 Africa’s Renewable Energy Opportunity - Roundtable Discussion 🌍 Did you know that Africa holds 60% of the world’s best solar resources but accounts for just 1% of the installed capacity? This is one of the most striking energy paradoxes today. Despite its rich abundance of solar, wind, hydro, and even emerging opportunities in green hydrogen, Africa has yet to realize its full renewable energy potential. Why is this the case? A lack of investment. While the continent’s renewable energy investments have increased, growing from less than $500 million a year between 2000-2009 to $5 billion annually by 2020, Africa still only receives 2% of global renewable energy funding. Even more troubling, just 3% of jobs in the global renewable sector are in Africa, missing out on both economic and employment opportunities. The pandemic further set things back, with renewable energy investments dropping by 35% in 2021 to an 11-year low, even as global investments rose by 9%. So, what can be done to close this gap? This roundtable will dive deep into the challenges and explore how Africa can attract the private investments needed to scale up its renewable energy sector.
