"My takeaway from this study is that safety devices that aim to improve our survival during burial by improving gas exchange are a viable concept." -Dr. Patrick Fink, writing for The High Route Last week, the research team from Eurac Research presented their findings about the prevalence of patent airways during critical burial to the Medical Commission at ICAR-International Commission for Alpine Rescue's 2024 congress, in addition to updates to the avalanche survival curve among other projects. Dr. Fink and his peers at The High Route will be reviewing backpacks with SBX over the course of this season, in addition to reviewing the medical research being published

Both born out of frustration with existing solutions available for winter travel in steep terrain, Raide and Safeback have teamed up to create two lightweight avalanche backpacks, launching Winter 24/25. Raide’s SB backpacks will weigh 1730g at 30L, and 1880g at 40L – making them the lightest avalanche backpacks on the market at their respective volumes. As important as the weight, SBX’s integration allows the same core features of the acclaimed - Raide LF 40L to remain on the backpack, allowing a highly functional ski backpack for ski touring and mountaineering. "This study found that patent airways were more than 3x more prevalent than obstructed for critically buried avalanche victims. This high rate of airway patency supports the ongoing development and the effectiveness of avalanche rescue systems that oppose asphyxiation in critically buried avalanche victims" (Eisendle, Rauch, Wallner, Brugger & Strappazon, 2024) After noting a lack of information regarding the lack of data explaining the ability to breathe during avalanche burial, researchers have published an analysis of avalanche accident data to explore how common it is to be buried with the ability to breathe versus obstructed airways. The Eurac Research team will be sharing their findings at ICAR this week - Thursday at 3:30pm in MEDCOM. See you at the Congress!

SBX production is nearly completed for the coming winter season - with units on their way to specialty ski retailers around the world as we speak. Something unique about our production in the context of our product's purpose is that we've found the most efficient way to secure the highest standards of quality and reliability at a low cost has been to keep production close to home. We are proud to say that SBX is Made in Norway. See more about our process and images from the factory floor in our blog below: https://lnkd.in/d7wrMfyx

For those following along from Norway... We're proud of what we've achieved in bringing our product to the snow safety market - and are grateful for the support and guidance we've had along the way. See more about how we've built our company and product:
Tanken på at spreke friluftsmennesker på fjelltur skal ha best mulig marginer for å komme hjem til sin familie, motiverte Safeback-gründerene til å satse. Alumniselskapet Safeback har imponert oss med sitt pågangsmot og sin stayerevne. Nå takker de VIS for god rådgivning og trygge rammer til å utvikle selskapet videre. – VIS har vært en fantastisk støttespiller, bedyrer Safeback-gründer, Tor Berge. It's not every day that we get to interact with medical doctors who also consider themselves ski bums and gearheads - let alone those who are excited and engaged in writing about it. It was a pleasure to discuss SBX and its applications with Dr. Patrick Fink, to help backcountry users navigate the research and testing behind SBX and its potential as a life-saving tool. As a company that values transparency in our understanding of our product's function, we are excited to see the potential acknowledged alongside the milestones we are working towards to prove its viability. Much more to come! Give it a read!

Years of prototyping and refining the SBX system have led us to our current design: a robust and simple snow safety tool that is always armed for deployment in case of an avalanche. The system is streamlined in its design, with only 3 moving parts for the user to interact with: the trigger handle to activate the system, the Test/Off button on the bottom of the device, and the Battery compartment. Because the power draw on the system is negligible when the system isn't running, there is no need for an on/off switch to ensure that the product is ready for use. So long as batteries are installed, the system will start when you pull the trigger, and only stop when either the batteries die after 90 minutes or when the system is manually turned off.

One of our greatest fears when moving through snow-covered terrain is being buried in an avalanche. Together with the Safeback team, we have developed Safeback SBX, an innovative piece of avalanche equipment designed to increase the margins of survival for individuals trapped under snow.
