How strange can pressure-temperature phase envelopes get ⚗? The paper by Benelli, Pisoni, and Cismondi-Duarte (2023) is a great resource that shows how weird and complex multi-component phase behavior can get (see the figure below)! Although there is a lot of complex behavior, reservoir engineers (like myself) usually limit our simulations to two phases (usually assumed to be vapor and liquid) and maybe a immiscible water phase if we're feeling good about technical abilities 👨💻! Multi-phase (three or more phases) behavior is real and important, but usually occurs at lower temperatures, which allows us to make simplifying assumptions for reservoir simulation! However, shallow and low temperature fields (like the ones in the Barents Sea) might be significantly impacted by this multi-phase behavior ❄! Happy learning 🤓!
