At the International Centre for EdTech Impact; WiKIT a key focus is connecting academic researchers with edtech companies for collaborative R&D. When asked about my vision, I say I hope the Centre won’t be needed in ten years -the gap we’re addressing is so crucial that I hope academia and the edtech industry will routinely partner by then 🔵 In my article for The Learning Agency, I argue that realizing this vision demands an integrated approach that blends hard and soft systems perspectives. We must foster a collaborative #ethical ecosystem where #researchers, #developers, and #teachers work together, giving equal weight to all participants and recognizing the value of their relationships 📘 This is a critical conversation I believe universities should be having with their education and learning departments because industry partnerships have the ability -and responsibility- to reshape what edtech does and means for students and teachers. -Do you know an #edtech company working with a #university research group? While I know of many great #parternships already, we need more examples 🔊 Please tag / share the names of companies and university researchers who are collaborating on edtech tools, to inspire further partnerships! 👏I am tagging some brilliant edtech #accelerators at universities that are supporting edtech innovation driven by the expertise of university researchers. 🌍We're thrilled to announce the release of our report 𝘌𝘯𝘷𝘪𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘭 𝘐𝘮𝘱𝘢𝘤𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘌𝘥𝘛𝘦𝘤𝘩: 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘏𝘪𝘥𝘥𝘦𝘯 𝘊𝘰𝘴𝘵𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘋𝘪𝘨𝘪𝘵𝘢𝘭 𝘓𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 🌍 - While #EdTech is often seen as a way to reduce paper usage and facilitate remote learning, this report sheds light on its significant environmental costs. - - Key challenges include the #energy consumption of data centers, the carbon footprint of #AI technologies, and the growing issue of electronic waste, which disproportionately affects vulnerable communities. 💡 The authors Sofia Shengjergji Anna Luzai, Anna Lindroos Cermakova, Natalia Kucirkova from International Centre for EdTech Impact; WiKIT and Parker Van Nostrand and Stef Mills from Digital Promise stress the importance of evaluating EdTech's carbon footprint, utilizing renewable energy, and creating content that #educates learners about environmental issues 📢 The report calls for collaboration across sectors and the establishment of 𝐠𝐥𝐨𝐛𝐚𝐥 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐄𝐝𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐬 𝐛𝐨𝐭𝐡 𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐞𝐱𝐜𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐞𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐬𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 🙏 Thank you to Neil Selwyn for an insightful #Foreword, Reviewers Pati R. and Chronis Kynigos and inspirational work in the field, including Future Leaders Climate Initiative at The Aspen Institute Michael H. Are you developing or researching EdTech tools? Join us for an online panel discussion organised by the International Centre for EdTech Impact; WiKIT. 📅 October 22, 4 pm BST (London) | 5 pm CET (Oslo) | 11 am EDT (New York) 📍 Online 🏷️ FREE Sign up at: https://lnkd.in/emv7FP6z I look forward to hearing thoughts on: ❓ When is the right time for efficacy research in a continuously evolving field in order to avoid stifling innovation or compromising its own validity? ❓What barriers to entry does efficacy research create, and does it favour large incumbents over emerging startups? ❓If the best efficacy is achieved within existing constraints in education, how can we work toward changing those constraints in the long term? ❓What are the consequences of high dropout rates for students who don’t fully engage with EdTech, as seen in cases like removal of 95% of users in efficacy studies?

📢 Is #evidence a competitive advantage for #EdTech? I'm pleased to share a new report co-authored with David Dockterman from Harvard Graduate School of Education, published by University of Stavanger - Estimated global spending on EdTech 2019-2025 is $1.742 trillion USD/HolonIQ - There is little robust evidence on digital technology’s added value in education/GEM Report UNESCO 2023 ---> How can we develop sustainable models of genuine, demonstrable #Impact at #scale for EdTech? 💡 We propose Three Paradigm Shifts: 1, A singular focus on Randomized Control Trial (RCT) efficacy --> shift to Multidimensional Measures 2, An emphasis on after-the-fact research --> shift to Iterative Life-Cycle Evidence 3, Rigid definition of rigor --> shift to Rigor in Context 🔺 These paradigm shifts need to happen if we want to move the needle in how edtech evidence is valued and incentivized in the EdTech ecosystem. Do you agree? How do you support these paradigm shifts? Sunil Gunderia Mike Sharples Michael H. Levine Tom Vandenbosch Luke Stannard Jimmie Odhiambo, M.S.Ed Kwame Nyatuame Dr. Yenda Prado Pati R.
