The recent floods in Kathmandu Valley have caused immense tragedy, affecting countless families. As we recover, we face another crisis: our rivers are now filled with plastic waste and hazardous materials, posing serious health risks to our communities. 🚨𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐈𝐬𝐬𝐮𝐞𝐬: 𝟭. 𝗗𝗲𝗯𝗿𝗶𝘀 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲: Floodwaters have scattered plastic and other waste across riverside areas, a clear sign we can’t ignore. 𝟮. 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝘀: Contaminated waste mixed with sewage increases the risk of disease outbreaks, especially in vulnerable riverside communities. 𝟯. 𝗖𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗴𝗲𝗱 𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀: Plastic waste blocks drainage systems, raising the risk of future floods. 🔔 𝗨𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗡𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗱: The events we’ve witnessed highlight the critical need for effective waste management systems and recycling programs. We must take collective action to prevent litter in the streets and segregation at home & proper disposal of waste to protect our waterways and communities at large.   Therefore, Biocomp Nepal in partnership with People in Need Nepal and CLEAN UP NEPAL is implementing RIVER+ project and we are committed to combating plastic pollution and protecting our rivers!   The RIVER+ project is funded by the Plastic Free Rivers and Seas for South Asia Project, implemented by the South Asia Co-operative Environment Programme, supported by The World Bank, and with implementing support from UNOPS. #PlasticFreeRivers #FloodRecovery

Through the 'Intersectional Green Futures: Advancing Climate Justice for All' project, supported by IM Swedish Development Partner, the Zero Waste at Schools (ZWAS) program has reached 203 students across five community schools in the Kapilvastu, Salyan, and Dang districts of Nepal. Zero Waste at Schools aims to promote and implement sustainable waste management practices in schools, extend this knowledge to homes and the broader community, and increase overall sustainable practices related to climate action. ZWAS focuses on capacity building in schools by providing training programs, workshops, and resources to educators and students. The program has been introduced in five schools, integrating seven modules with hands-on lessons on waste management, waste segregation, the 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle), composting, the impacts of open-air waste burning, e-waste management, and the relationship between waste management and climate change. As a result, students and educators gain a better understanding of sustainable waste management practices, enabling them to incorporate these principles into their daily lives. This empowers children to become responsible citizens of tomorrow. #cleanupnepal #cleanup #ZWAS #zerowasteatschools

CLEAN UP NEPAL handed over a bailing machine to Dil Bahadur Sarki, the owner of the Rapti Kawad Collection Centre in Gorahi Sub-Metropolitan, Ward No. 16, Karautedanda. This bailing machine is designed to compress cardboard and plastic items. Previously, plastic bottles would accumulate in large quantities, and due to the lack of compression techniques, Mr. Sarki faced significant challenges in transporting them. However, with the introduction of this machine, the volume of plastic waste can now be reduced by up to one-third, making transportation much more efficient and allowing for larger quantities to be moved at once. This initiative was a collaborative effort between Gorahi Sub-Metropolitan, the Federal Kamalari Development Forum, and CLEAN UP NEPAL, with support from IM Swedish Development Partner. By providing essential tools like the bailing machine, the project aims to improve waste management and recycling efficiency, contributing to a cleaner and more sustainable community. #cleanupnepal #cleanup #bailingmachine

Going into the #PlasticFreeRivers campaign, we explored the barriers to waste segregation. Our formative research under the RIVER+ project examined waste management practices and social dynamics in river corridor areas using the Barrier Analysis (BA) tool. We also identified key motivating factors for waste segregation within this group. Key motivators include: 𝟏. 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 𝐛𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐭𝐬: 59 out of 100 participants believe that waste segregation promotes a healthier environment. 𝟐. 𝐈𝐧𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: 34 out of 100 participants believe it helps generate income. 𝟑. 𝐅𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐲𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠: 33 out of 100 participants believe segregation facilitates proper recycling. 𝟒. 𝐄𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: 67 out of 100 participants believe waste segregation helps preserve the environment, keeping surroundings clean and allowing flora, fauna, and rivers to thrive. The RIVER+ project is funded by the Plastic Free Rivers and Seas for South Asia Project, implemented by the South Asia Co-operative Environment Programme, supported by The World Bank, and with implementing support from UNOPS.  The RIVER+ project is led by Biocomp Nepal in partnership with People in Need Nepal and CLEAN UP NEPAL and we are committed to combating plastic pollution and protecting our rivers!
