About us
Invest for Impact Nepal (IIN) is a ground-breaking collaboration between Development Finance Institutions (DFIs) and Development Partners to unlock and accelerate transformative foreign investments to speed up growth, create jobs, and assist in the development of an equitable and sustainable economy in Nepal. IIN aims to achieve this by enabling Financial Institutions (FIs) and Private Equity and Venture Capital (PEVC) funds access resources and expertise from DFIs and impact investors for investment into Nepali businesses and develop the emerging investment ecosystem. It has been recognised by the Oxford Fragility Forum, the leading forum that brings together DFIs for an action-oriented discussion on how to improve investment in fragile and conflict-affected environments, as one of the most successful global examples of collaboration. IIN is established by British International Investment (BII), the Dutch Entrepreneurial Development Bank (FMO), and the Swiss Agency for Development Cooperation (SDC) to complement existing efforts to attract DFI investment to support private sector growth. The IIN initiative commenced in February 2021 to research and understand the investment market and ecosystem constraints. Since August 2022, it translated these findings into implementation. This phase of the programme will run until July 2025.

🆕 Swedfund International and Finnfund have made their first direct investment in Nepal's banking sector by providing USD 10 million each to Siddhartha Bank Limited. This investment will support MSMEs, agriculture, agribusiness, and hydropower development in Nepal. “There is limited access to long-term funding in Nepal and as a Development Finance Institution, we can also further enhance Siddhartha Bank’s environmental and social governance, as well as impact work, which makes this investment important." - Jane Niedra, Investment Director, Financial Inclusion at Swedfund. The loan will support gender equality and women’s empowerment, with at least 30% of the loan proceeds being allocated to women-led businesses. The Bank has developed tailor-made products for women entrepreneurs and currently 41% of its clients are women. 👉 Read more: https://bit.ly/48cL7lN #Swedfund #Finnfund #Nepal #FinancialInclusion #GenderEquality #RenewableEnergy #DFI #DevelopmentFinanace

Invest for Impact Nepal (IIN) and the Nepal Private Equity Association (NPEA) co-hosted an event on “Unlocking the Potential of PEVC Investments in Nepal” on October 23, 2024, bringing together 90+ representatives from DFIs, development partners, insurance companies, PEVC funds, and high-net-worth individuals. During the event, NPEA presented its PEVC Market Snapshot report, which revealed key investment trends: - USD 101 million has been invested in Nepal’s ecosystem through 16 funds as of 2023. - In 2023 alone, USD 35 million was invested by 8 funds, with 5 of them being SIF licenced funds. - Sector-wise investments showed IT as the leading sector, followed by renewable energy, agribusiness and real estate. - For exits, founder buyouts emerged as the most implemented strategy, with 5 funds achieving 17 exits from portfolio companies. Mr. Anup Upreti from Pioneer Law Associates led a session on navigating Nepal’s PEVC regulatory landscape, what has been achieved to date and the unfinished agenda that needs to be addressed to further increase investments into the sector. The event also marked the launch of NPEA’s Investment Platform, which highlights key data points around PEVC investments, which was inaugurated by H.E. Mr. Rob Fenn, British Ambassador to Nepal and H.E. Dr. Danielle Meuwly, Ambassador of Switzerland to Nepal. This was followed by a panel discussion around opportunities to drive PEVC growth in Nepal. The panellists for this interesting discussion were: Mr. Srini Nagarajan, Managing Director and Head of Asia, British International Investment (BII) Dr. Nabaraj Adhikari, Executive Director, Securities Board of Nepal (SEBON) Mr. Khagendra Basnet, Director, Department of Industry (DOI) Ms. Nikita Bajracharya, Senior Investment Manager, Dolma Impact Fund Mr. Rajendra Khetan, Chairman, Khetan Group And the discussion was moderated by Mr. Buddhika Samarasinghe, Programme Director at Invest for Impact Nepal. One of the key takeaways from this discussion was the need to develop a vibrant venture capital industry which lays the foundation for a new generation of entrepreneurs to emerge and contribute to a more inclusive growth, job creation, and diversification of the economy. Critical in this is the role of regulators to develop a more favourable enabling environment and the need to crowd-in impact and DFI investors to support PEVC fund growth. Nepal Rastra Bank has released the Green Finance Taxonomy 2024, a key guiding document for all stakeholders in the financial ecosystem—banks, investors, issuers, private sector entities and regulators. This taxonomy aims to enhance sustainable finance by providing a standardised framework to classify environmentally sustainable activities and attract capital aligned with green and ESG principles. The Green Finance Taxonomy, 2024, will serve as a reference document to Class A, B, C, and D financial institutions, including Infrastructure Development Bank, to guide the disbursement of loans and similar types of financing. #Greenfinancetaxonomy #Nepalrastrabank #Centralbank #Sustainablefinance #Investforimpactnepal

What we mean and do with #MarketCreation? This time in Nepal. No doubt we will face the issue in financing the SDGs by 2030 of ‘bankable’ project and companies. Hence at FMO - Dutch entrepreneurial development bank we are scaling up our efforts in Market Creation. In Nepal we already are working on this for a number of years. Together with British International Investment and Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, we have started the initiative called Invest for Impact Nepal (IIN). IIN has helped to create an enabling environment in Nepal to get more financial institutions ‘bankable’ for DFIs. And it is working: the number of DFIs investing in Nepal grew from 3 to 10 in the last three year. Together with the Nepal Banking Association, IIN last year started an ESG course for bankers in Nepal. Now they jointly organized a seminar on climate finance where I had the opportunity to be the keynote speaker. I shared how the need to get from vision & plans to real action, and how we as FMO as willing to help – referring among others to the Technical Assistance facility with NMB Bank Ltd. to take ESG management in hydro projects to a next level, cooperating with the International Hydropower Association (IHA). My colleague Jace Jeesun HAN contributed her insights as well. #sustainablefinance #impactinvesting

On September 27, Invest for Impact Nepal (IIN) and the Nepal Bankers' Association (NBA) jointly organised the first-ever Climate Finance Masterclass for CEOs of Nepal’s commercial and development banks, marking a significant step forward for the country’s financial services sector. The masterclass offered a valuable platform for banking leaders to deepen their understanding of climate-related risks in the banking sector, integrate climate risk management into their operations, and address the challenges of financing the transition to a low-carbon economy. The session also covered green finance products such as green bonds & sustainability-linked loans, green finance taxonomies, and the importance of ensuring credibility in climate financing. Participants also discussed climate opportunities, the regulatory landscape, and the role of financial sector alliances and initiatives in advancing sustainable finance. Expertly led by Ms. Yulanda C., former Managing Director at DBS Singapore and Sustainability Specialist at Standard Chartered Bank UK, and Ms. Alison Snellen, Principal Consultant at IBIS Consulting Singapore, the masterclass brought together leaders from 13 commercial and 2 development banks. Through interactive discussions, participants shared insights on how Nepal’s financial sector can address climate change and explore customized solutions for the industry. #ClimateFinance #GreenFinance #SustainableBanking #Investforimpactnepal #NBA #Climateriskmanagement #GreenBonds #Sustainability #BankingLeadership
