Julie Yadav, an 8-year-old from Biratnagar, was born with bilateral knee genu valgum, leaving her with a physical disability. A holder of a blue disability identity card, Julie faced years of treatment, including surgeries starting at age six. Despite her struggles, her love for learning and dedication to her studies never trembled. With her family’s unwavering support and assistance from the 'Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation Program', she received braces, enabling her to walk again and return to school, where she thrives academically. Bright and determined, Julie dreams of a better future. Her father, inspired by her resilience and intelligence, hopes to see her become a doctor. Together, they embody courage, love, and the unyielding power of hope. #KarunaFoundationNepal #CommunitySupport #Rehabilitation #DisabilityPreventionandRehabilitationProgram

Saving children from disability, one by one
About us
Karuna Foundation Nepal is a non-governmental organization based in Nepal, established in 2015. It aims to prevent avoidable disabilities in children, improve the quality of life for disabled children and adults, and bring about progressive changes in the lives of at-risk families by developing evidence-based, scalable community models. Karuna Foundation was started in the Netherlands by a Dutch entrepreneur, Rene aan de Stegge, in 2007 with the aim of preventing disabilities among children and improving the quality of life of children with disabilities. Karuna Foundation, as an international non-governmental organization, has been working for more than 15 years. Karuna Nepal INGO's Senior Management approached friends and well-wishers who had been instrumental in shaping Karuna's mission up to this point to learn more about the transformation of an international NGO into a Nepali NGO. There was overwhelming support for the idea, and thus in July 2015, a new NGO-Karuna Foundation Nepal was registered and started to function. As a mother organization, Karuna Foundation Netherlands stays close and involved and continues to invest in quality, innovation, capacity building and research in order to further roll out Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation Program throughout the nation. Karuna Foundation strives to decrease the number of birth defects and disabilities among children by improving existing health systems and empowering poor communities and vulnerable groups within these communities, such as children with disabilities, mothers, and newborns, to develop their capacity to claim their right to healthcare.

On October 23, 2024, we proudly celebrated the opening of the Autism Care Center in Biratnagar-4, Kanchanbari, inaugurated by Honorable Mayor Mr. Nagesh Koirala. This transformative day care center is dedicated to children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), providing a structured and nurturing environment for their social, educational, and life development. The center will accommodate children from 2 to 18 years old. With a capacity of 20 to 25 children, the center offers vital therapies, including speech, language and behavior therapy, all tailored to embrace each child’s unique individuality. Biratnagar Metropolitan City has provided a vehicle for the safe transportation of autistic children, ensuring hassle-free access to the center for families. Team includes trained nurses supported by Karuna Foundation Nepal, who have received professional training from the Autism Care Nepal Society (ACNS), Harisiddhi. Karuna Foundation Nepal has also played a crucial role in diagnosing autism and establishing a structured framework, providing staffing and training, and developing activities specifically for autistic children, along with conducting monthly reviews and evaluations to ensure effective and inclusive care. This center is a significant step toward fostering acceptance and compassion in our community. Let’s work together to create a supportive environment for every child! #KarunaFoundationNepal #AutismCareCenter

Dipesh Chaudhary’s life changed in 2077 B.S. when a Community-Based Rehabilitation Facilitator (CBRF) visited him through the Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation Program (DPRP). Struggling with limited mobility and an outdated disability card, Dipesh received help renewing it at the Disability Assessment Camp. Joining the Milijuli group in his ward, he found support and a sense of belonging. In 2079 B.S., he received a tricycle through the DPRP, transforming his mobility. The CBRF also helped him expand his small grocery shop. Once unemployed, Dipesh now earns a steady income, supporting his family and finding new purpose as the secretary of Milijuli Samuha. Grateful and optimistic, he is now an active advocate for disability rights, inspiring hope in his community. #DisabilityPreventionandRebahilitationProgram #DisabilityAwareness
