#newpublication Nepali researchers, including Dr. Basant Giri from KIAS, have published a study revealing that the Gandaki River in #Nepal contains up to 61 #microplastics (larger than 30 microns) per liter of #water. Based on these measurements, it is estimated that the #river transports approximately 0.7 × 10^8 microplastics downstream per second. Microplastic contamination has emerged as a serious threat to aquatic ecosystems. This research paper led by Baburam Kandel focused on the Sapta-#Gandaki river system, where 120 water samples were collected from 30 sites, spanning elevations from 2,850 to 140 meters above sea level. The findings could help plan strategies for controlling microplastic #pollution in river systems. The #research has been published in the International Journal of Environmental Science and Technology by Springer Nature. For more information, please contact Dr. Basant Giri or Dr. Bhanu Neupane. KIAS scientist Dr. Dr. Ravi Mohan Tiwari recently completed a fieldwork expedition in Makalu Barun National Park, located in eastern Nepal, during the first week of October. The purpose of this research is to investigate how climate change impacts the growth of Silver fir trees, both above and below ground. This study seeks to provide a deeper understanding of the ecological responses of Silver fir trees to shifting climate patterns, particularly in the Himalayan region. The research is being conducted in collaboration with Dr. Makoto Kobayashi from Hokkaido University, Japan, and Tribhuvan University, Nepal. By combining expertise from multiple institutions, the project aims to generate valuable insights that could inform conservation strategies and contribute to broader discussions on climate change adaptation for forest ecosystems in Nepal and beyond.
