In our third instalment of the 'What's Next? from AgResearch' podcast we're discussing 'Are alternative proteins going to wipe out the dairy industry?' Alternative proteins such as dairy proteins produced through precision fermentation are now a reality globally. But what does it mean for New Zealand? Is this stuff grown in industrial vats a genuine threat to our livestock industries? In this episode, our expert AgResearch senior scientist Scott Knowles outlines what precision fermentation is, how it might fit alongside conventional dairy production and what opportunities could be seized by New Zealand to add value to its existing markets (including the interesting role forestry waste might play). To round out the episode, we’ll also hear about other technological advances that are driving research and innovations in agriculture. Our IT infrastructure and security manager Ben Taylor talks about the challenge of handling large volumes of data and the computing power now available; while senior data scientist Sam Hitchman discusses how new tools are making it much faster and easier to investigate issues such as methane output from animals. Potentially millions of litres of milk could be lost through wastewater in dairy processing. With technologies available to extract those milk solids from the wastewater, researchers are now looking at ways this recovered material could be used in products that include fuels, bioplastics and feedstocks. Our own Mariza Reis spoke to Farmers Weekly NZ about opportunities that could include use in electrical devices 🥛 ⚡ 💡 🔬 👇 https://lnkd.in/g8hWzGvf

We love the work the Wildlife Hospital Dunedin (https://lnkd.in/g_zSFHuz) is doing improving outcomes for NZ's native species. Our partnership with them to CT scan sick or injured animals in their care is always a highlight for the InnerVision team. This is a Hoiho (2024 Bird of the year) being set up for scanning.

In the late 1980s, planes flying from South America to New Zealand carried some unusual and precious travellers, tucked away in the business-class drinks cabinet, of all places. These tiny passengers were wasp eggs and larvae sitting inside weevils, which upon arrival in New Zealand would become soldiers in a war against entrenched agricultural pests that has saved the country hundreds of millions of dollars.

With millions of litres of milk being lost in wastewater each year, is there something we can do to reduce the waste and extract some value? At our virtual Dairy Industry Workshop today, our own Mariza Reis presented on the very real potential to recover milk solids from the wastewater and use chemical modification to transform the waste into valuable commercial products such as fuels. Alyesha Candy, from Scion, also spoke at the workshop about the potential to transform waste into products such as feedstocks and bioplastics Bioresource Processing Alliance (BPA) Coralie de La Fage Alex McGrath #dairy #nzdairy #nzdairyfarming #DairyFarming #DairyIndustry #MilkProduction #dairywaste #CircularEconomy #wasteminimisation #nzfarming #research #sustainablefarming #science #agresearch #agresearchnz #newzealand
