For this month’s Āpōpō Views piece, Āpōpō CE Murray Pugh has shared a retrospective on asset management from his four years at Āpōpō. - Reflections on Four Years of Infrastructure Asset Management Four years have flown by, filled with significant events and changes in the infrastructure asset management sector. Here are some of my key reflections: • COVID-19 Impact: Beginning with my start in January 2021, the pandemic drastically changed work styles, with a shift to remote work and virtual connections. Technology like Teams and Zoom became essential, though the under-utilisation of office spaces is concerning. • Skill Shortages: There was a notable lack of skilled professionals to handle the necessary infrastructure investments, particularly in water and roads. Efforts were made to add asset management skills to immigration preference lists... Continue reading the article here 🔗 https://lnkd.in/gfDMBKq4

How do we capture insights and learnings from projects, embed the lessons and ultimately make them stick? Ka Mua Ka Muri | Walking backwards into the future. I have been reflecting on why this is challenging, and more so, on what could make it easier. We have an overwhelming abundance of research, reflections, reports and reviews - how do we use these to improve our future planning. It's ultimately leadership, champions within, governance buy in and a want to change within an organisation. If we can get this mix right, prioritise our efforts and create a continuous improvement culture, these can provide significant benefit to future projects, the way we manage our assets and how well prepared we are for future disasters. Feel free to share your thoughts on why barriers exist, ways these could be addressed or where you see lessons captured and embedded, and this working well. I have penned a few in the article linked below. #changemanagement #lessons #planning #learning #continuousimprovement #culture Āpōpō | Beca | Project Management Institute of New Zealand | New Zealand Infrastructure Commission, Te Waihanga

Join us at the forum to hear from industry leaders about what they are doing to transform assets for communities.   Ernst Zöllner Zollner is an urban economist and planner who has pondered the vexed issue of successful urban growth management over the last 30 years in an embarrassingly large number of roles across three consultancies, a local authority (Wellington City), two Crown Entities (NZTA Waka Kotahi and Kāinga Ora), three Ministries (MBIE, HUD and MfE), an industry lobby group (Local Government NZ) and even a university (Auckland). Ernst is currently the Director Strategic Urban Partnerships at Kāinga Ora and through this role is an enthusiastic member of the respective steering groups of NZ’s six Urban Growth Partnerships. These six Partnership areas (all our Tier 1 urban areas plus Queenstown) accounted for 75% of NZ’s population growth between 2018-23, so success in urban growth management and land development really matters!
