Organisations in New Zealand are taking a significant step toward sustainability as some medium to large companies are now required to report on Climate-Related Disclosure (CRD), with Australia following suit. Transition planning is a key part of the reporting regime for CRD in New Zealand, and can be challenging due to the uncertain future impacts of climate change. Kristin Renoux and Laura Robichaux explore a potential solution: Dynamic Adaptive Pathway Planning (DAPP), a scalable way to flexibly plan for investment in climate adaptation for assets and communities. When he’s not tackling complex structural engineering projects, Weng Yuen Kam (Kam) our Director – Business and Practice Development Structural Engineering is making waves in the academic world with industry peers Matt Fox and Damian Grant. Congratulations to Kam for co-authoring and publishing his new book, Retrofit of Existing Buildings: A Guideline for Practising Engineers. This book provides engineers, construction professionals and researchers with valuable insights into seismic retrofit principles, challenges and solutions. We're super proud of Kam's achievement and excited to see how this work will contribute to the industry. Note: the views expressed in this book are those of the authors and may not reflect the perspectives of Beca. In a tight or dangerous spot when inspecting infrastructure, who’re you going to call? In Newsroom NZ today, Marcus Hall details the development of PIPE-i, the robot making surveying safer. By inspecting dangerous assets and creating a virtual digital twin, not only does PIPE-i keep people safe, but provides an accurate representation of the structure for improved asset management. Congratulations to our Gender@Beca team who were ‘Highly Commended’ at the 2024 Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) Australasia Awards, in recognition of our efforts to promote equality, diversity and inclusion in engineering. Our Australian employee-led initiative, Gender@Beca, is dedicated to increasing the representation of women and gender-diverse individuals in the engineering profession. A key driver of this initiative’s success is our STEAM Partnership with The Mac.Robertson’s Girls High School in Melbourne, which aims to encourage young women to pursue a career in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics. Kylie Harris, Head of People and Culture Australia says, “I’m so proud of what our Gender@Beca team has achieved over the past four years. Their hard work has made a real difference, and this recognition means a lot as we continue pushing for more progress.” Well done to our tireless team (two members - Kylie Lim and Kate Patterson pictured below) and all other 2024 entrants! Last Sunday’s M5.7 earthquake at 5:08am was an unsettling start to the day for many Wellingtonians. In response, Beca’s Beacon earthquake notification service helped ease some of the stress for asset owners managing the disruption. Beacon Product Manager Stuart Orchard was straight into action supporting our clients and the Wellington structures team. “Beacon delivers ongoing support, proving especially valuable during events like Sunday’s earthquake by providing traffic light alerts that help our clients triage which assets to focus their time and engineering resources on," says Stuart. “It provides our clients timely information about the estimated impact of an earthquake via app, email and text notifications. This allows them to be surgical in how they respond – and it’s great for keeping stress levels down!” If you’re interested in finding out how Beacon can support your operations in New Zealand and Australia contact us at beacon@beca.com. Wrapping up the Sustainable Business Council NZ's 'Insights from the Top' series, Amelia Linzey, Group Chief Executive, joins member CEOs to share where they draw inspiration for driving sustainability and offer valuable advice for other business leaders aiming to do the same. Amelia advises business leaders not to be afraid of not having all the answers, saying, “When you’re on a journey of transformation, I think you need to acknowledge that you don’t have all the answers when you start. So it’s being prepared to learn, being curious and being a bit adventurous on how some of these solutions might work." It was great to be out on the farm with Meridian Energy as we helped set up a temporary transformer at their West Wind Farm located in Mākara, west of Wellington city. A big thanks to Transpower New Zealand for loaning it. Our team, alongside Ventia and ACME Group, quickly jumped in to tackle technical challenges and made sure everything was good to go by double-checking the protection settings on the temporary transformer. It’s always awesome to see teamwork in action. Follow the transformers journey as it makes it’s way up the farm in the video below. #WindFarm #Transformer #Electricity #Sustainability #CleanEnergy #Beca #MakeEverydayBetter
This team’s delivering wonders! (and a transformer) 🤖 Meridian's West Wind Farm has been one transformer short since a fault last year – limiting its generation capacity. Transpower New Zealand has kindly loaned this transformer to West Wind until a permanent replacement arrives next year. But getting this 81 tonne unit to site meant a long, winding journey up the narrow West Wind access road. Once the replacement transformer is connected over the next few weeks, West Wind will be back to full capacity with an extra 44MW of generation available. We’re very grateful to Transpower for their flexibility, and to our contractors Beca, Ventia and ACME Group for stepping up at short notice. It’s an outstanding example of collaboration and cooperation within the industry, and a great result for Aotearoa New Zealand. #WindPower #WindFarm #WindTurbine #HeavyTransportation #Transformer #ElectricityIndustry #Sustainability #CleanEnergy #ProjectTransport #Oversize #HeavyLifts #Electricity
