Spain's major tourist destination is the Balearic Islands. Home to popular spots such as Ibiza that have invested in developing a circular tourism system. As we hear more about the impact travellers have on local ecosystems and communities. Spain is committed to developing a sustainable tourism sector that ensures a healthy and thriving industry for future generations. Spain's Balearic Islands are leading the way in circular tourism by focusing on resource and material flows in local tourism, highlighting circular opportunities in five key areas: water, energy, materials, food, and mobility. They have emphasised the interaction of these areas with terrestrial and marine environments and how effective environmental management can enhance circular opportunities. With over 100 circular initiatives in progress, these include focusing on: Manufacturing and construction supply chains  Tourism activities spanning from retail to accommodation  Repairing and renovating infrastructure Spain's redesign of its tourism sector has us thinking: what does Aotearoa, New Zealand, need to do to embrace the circular tourism opportunity? If you, like us, are motivated to improve your business's positive impact and want to unlock more ways to achieve this, get in touch: hello@circularity.co.nz Together, we are designing a better way forward.

We recently were invited to share the co-design of a future orchard in 2030 at the New Zealand Apples and Pears conference in Hawkes Bay. Supported by the Ministry for the Environment | Manatū mō te Taiao, Circularity was commissioned to research and inform the visual design of a low-waste, nature-positive orchard for 2030. This collaborative project brought together growers, scientists, retailers, innovation specialists, and Māori representatives to explore the potential and reality of this vision. We heard of the need for a holistic approach to orchard practices, consideration for the role of the orchard in the community, its reliance on nature's living systems like soil and water, as well as the global customer base. At the conference, Louise Nash presented the final design including seven on-orchard practices that have the potential to deliver multiple benefits—environmental, economic, climate, social, and cultural—aligned with Te Tiriti principles to deliver ecosystem health, reduce harm, and enhance prosperity for the industry We were joined by the industry's future leaders, to explore their visions for future orchards and pathways to achieve them. Thank you to Hannah Greaves, Grace Fulford, Liam Sykes, and Pip Terekia for joining me on stage in the incredible Toitoi - Hawke's Bay Arts & Events Centre in Hastings. Moving forward, NZAPI will use this work to spark conversations about the future of orchards within the industry—among growers, packers, and marketers of apples and pears for domestic and export markets. If you are interested in learning more, please reach out. On behalf of NZAPI, the Circularity Team, our panel of Future Leaders who joined us on stage, and the industry, we thank everyone who contributed to the 2030 Future Orchard project including the Ministry for the Environment strategic partnerships team. Anna Ririnui, Logan Anderson, Jane (Puddephatt) James This was an absolute dream project for us! If you, like us, are motivated to design a better future and are looking for ways to unlock this, get in touch, we would love to help Hello@circularity.co.nz.

As a designer, sociologist and educational entrepreneur, she challenges people to think differently about the challenges we face. For her work in advancing science and innovation for sustainability, she was named Champion of the Earth by the United Nations and Changemaker by LinkedIn. “My circular redesign workshop will enable business leaders to envisage their products and services as part of the global transformation to a circular and regenerative economy,” she explains. “By exploring the full systems impacts and looking at the benefits of circular business models, the workshop will ensue that New Zealand businesses are leading the way when it comes to circular materials, products and services.” Leyla Acaroglu Our friends at Sustainable Brands have given our founder, Louise Nash, the amazing opportunity to introduce circular economy superstar Leyla Acaroglu. Why do the economic rules of the game need to be changed? Well, here’s one reason, ‘consumption is a becoming something of a charade from end to end’. Enter circular economy expert Ken Webster’s latest article - ‘That Slippery Linear Economy’, which discusses the issue of digital advances which make production ever cheaper, supply chains more convoluted and sales, marketing and distribution cheaper and more diffuse. At the consumer end it feels like almost anything can be obtained via a digital interface — and quickly — even from across the globe. Resulting in retailers like Temu and other similar sites that support practices like counterfeiting and free return online shopping. Without a chain of responsibility and true pricing, we often end up with products that are harmful to people and the environment. Ken suggests we need to change the rules of the game by: 🍃 Prices telling the truth,  🍃 Recirculating economic rents, 🍃 Business concentration being reversed,  🍃 Governments steering investment firmly in the required direction “...because it is what they owe their citizens.”- Ken Webster, That Slippery Linear Economy If you, like us, are motivated to unlock the value of circularity, contact hello@circularity.co.nz to start your journey. What national targets and indicators do we need for New Zealand to realise the circular opportunity? The Interim Report from Australia's Circular Economy Ministerial Advisory Group identifies the opportunity for a national framework to support Australia's transition towards a circular economy. It recommends setting national and sector-based circular economy targets, with a ‘Measuring what matters framework’. At Circularity, we believe that businesses, communities, and policymakers must unite at Circularity to drive this transition. So, how might your business start on circular measurement and target setting?   You might start by using the globally recognised Circular Transition Indicator. The Circular Transition Indicators (CTI) tool, created by WBCSD and Circular IQ, is a globally recognised framework that helps businesses measure and improve their circularity. Implementing the CTI Tool establishes baseline measures, models improvement scenarios, validates new circular solutions for better decision-making alongside procurement and suppliers and estimates future shifts for setting ambitious sustainability targets. You can read more about how leading businesses are measuring their circularity right now using the CTI tool here - https://lnkd.in/gC5nXUpt If you, like us, are motivated to improve your business's positive impact and want to unlock ways to measure and improve circularity, get in touch at Hello@circularity.co.nz.
