  • Read about what is possible when using Joy Allcock's now evidence-proven approach from the article published by the NZ Education Gazette regarding the action research that led to the wider research project Shine... "A professional development journey and its link to student success. When junior literacy achievement results weren’t looking too good, Titahi Bay School decided to do something about it. School principal KERRY DELANEY reflects on their learning journey. At the start of 2010, the teachers in the junior syndicate at Titahi Bay School began a learning journey. In 2008 and 2009, we found that our new entrant children were not achieving the literacy results we expected or wanted." The Science of Reading research points to the need to teach the key skills and knowledge for literacy in a systematic and explicit way. Between 2010 and 2012, Joy Allcock worked with teachers at Titahi Bay School in Porirua to do just that. Using assessments to understand both students’ and teachers’ prior knowledge they changed the way literacy was taught in the first three years at school, with remarkable results. The results of this project were published in the NZ Education Gazette in 2013. You can read about them here: https://lnkd.in/gk9bguan Because of these results, Professor James Chapman (Massey University) designed a larger, more robust study to see if the results could be replicated in other schools. This was the Shine Literacy Project: https://lnkd.in/g7w2HwiG

Introducing JillE Literacy's Book of the Month: Brachio! Imagine your students moving and grooving with the dinosaurs at the dinosaur boogie. 🦖🎵 Then imagine how they’ll feel when the littlest dinosaurs are forced out because the big kids…er, dinosaurs…are having all the fun. This story presents situations students can relate to, leading to rich discussions about characters, story problems and solutions, and inferences — along with plenty of fun words and actions that get children engaged and participating while building oral language and vocabulary. Brachio also provides safe and authentic opportunities for pro-social learning when students develop empathy for the characters, talk about why the characters act the way they do, and explore strategies for dealing with bullies and extending kindness to others.
