Building an equitable future through transforming health and wellbeing outcomes everyday, to ensure whānau flourish

About us

Collaborative Aotearoa is a national network of primary health care organisations and supporting partners committed to pursuing a vision focused on the health and wellbeing for whānau and communities. Collaborative Aotearoa (the Collaborative) has committed to expanding its reach to support its networks and continue to bring focus to equitable access to more general practices and communities across Aotearoa. The Collaborative recognises that the 2022 Health Reforms will bring transformation across the sector that will require trusted partnerships to implement change at pace and scale. Our focus is strengthened through: whānau centred models of care and community led approaches honouring Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the principles including equity, and ensuring Māori and Pacific are partners in the design and delivery of system change and implementation. One of our core strengths is being able to connect people around equitable primary care responses and building trusting relationships, particularly with Māori and Pacific at the community level. We do this by drawing on the cultural resources and capability of our members and supporting partners, creating an environment where voices are heard and respected, and promoting a culturally appropriate and safe workforce. This is where collaboration is the norm not the exception, acting as a catalyst for change and implementation. We lean into well-established partnerships with a vast range of experts in health and wellbeing, localities, digital health and system change.

💡 We are deeply interested and actively collaborating with people from across multiple primary care organisations, supported by IT experts, to support the evolution of AI in primary care. Our kaimahi came across a fascinating article today: Peter-Lucas Jones, CEO of Te Hiku Media, was named in the TIME100 AI list of 2024 for his work in preserving te reo Māori through AI technology. Te Hiku Media has created a suite of ‘te reo Māori’ natural language processing (NLP) tools that can enable the creation of new digital products and services that leverage te reo Māori speech recognition, including a speech-to-text system (audio transcription), text-to-speech system (TTS), and other pronunciation focussed language tools. The speech-to-text model for te reo Māori has achieved a 92% accuracy rate, the best in the world. Jones aims to inspire indigenous communities to become developers of technology, not just users, and emphasises the importance of indigenous data sovereignty to maintain identity in the digital landscape. https://lnkd.in/gZjdeSAV

Our Change Lead, Koral Fitzgerald has been leaning into her curiosity and embracing the courage in daring leadership over the last three days, attending the Dare To Lead event, hosted by Kaila Colbin from Boma. "These three days have been incredible. Sharing space with 50-odd other people willing to explore the dynamics of fear, shame, vulnerability, guilt, embarrassment and the variety of emotions and experiences that these can encompass was powerful. I'm grateful for the safe space Kaila provided for us to dig-in deep to own our story, rumble with vulnerability, living into our values, exploring trust and learning to rise from our past falls to bring more wisdom and empathy into our lives. Possibly the best course I've ever attended". We're looking forward to exploring the approaches and learnings Koral has captured, to benefit herself, the team, and all those we work with.

Today our CEO, Jess Morgan-French visited one of the community clinics in Singapore while on holiday. The community clinics associated with SingHealth have supported patients to receive allied health services in a faster, more efficient and equitable way. Routine and simple planned care being delivered in the community making a real difference for those receiving the care. CareHQ, the virtual GP service and joint venture between ProCare and Southern Cross Health Insurance provided care to more than 43,000 patients over the last 12 months, up 78% on the 12 months prior, where it served more than 24,000 patients. Bindi Norwell, Chair of CareHQ said: “This huge boost in numbers is a true testament to the value that CareHQ and telehealth services provide to the people of Aotearoa New Zealand, and the assistance that has been provided to support General Practices across the motu." Norwell says that as General Practices continue to face high levels of demand, and workforce shortages, CareHQ has been a great support to help with afterhours and overflow services.
