Bringing some colour and future vocational education needs to the Quarry NZ conference today in Rotorua. Listening to Dr Paul Sutton share the learnings from the ConCOVE Tūhura funded project for the sector. Paul’s outlining the Fit For Future approach the industry will need to 2030+. The focus for the conference is The Future is Digital. A massive challenge for most sectors, not only quarrying, mining and extractives. Baseline digital skills have been identified in multiple ConCOVE projects as being required in #VET. It sounds like a no brainer right? However we’re not embedding this well enough through current wider education delivery. Side bar: most of this audience look my age or older (and male), what are we doing to upskill their digital skillsets? Why does a business invest in their work-based trainers?   Since the fantastic ConCOVE Tūhura conference last week I've been thinking about this a lot. Why is it that some businesses value training and development? And others see it as a tick box?   Below is my take on the potential issues and opportunities that exist around #workbasedtraining, informed by presenters at the conference, conversations with business owners and training managers, listening in at Waihanga Ara Rau webinars this week, reading various Ako Aotearoa reports and asking questions of ākonga/trainees during my own training days.   If a business is focused on developing technical skills, the reasons for investing in training and development are probably:   1. To meet compliance requirements 2. To meet legal regulations 3. To reduce skills and knowledge gaps   However, if a business is moving their focus to people skills and business growth, the reasons for investing in training and development (and on-job training) are more likely to be:   4. To grow the team 5. To attract and retain talented workers 6. Succession planning 7. Innovation   Work-based trainers might be supervisors, but more often they're another tradesperson ready for an opportunity to grow and learn. Why assume they want to just grow their technical skills?
