2024 HRNZ Leadership Award and HRD NZ HR Director of the Year; HRD Hotlist: 2021 to 2024 | Head of People and Culture at Connetics

Celebrating excellence in Canterbury! Last Friday, I had the privilege of presenting the trophies at the Canterbury Hockey Secondary School Premier League finals, sponsored by Connetics. It was an evening filled with incredible talent, teamwork, and determination. Congratulations to Rangi Ruru Girls' School for their hard-fought victory over St Margaret's College, Christchurch, New Zealand in the final. The match was a testament to the skill and spirit of both teams. In the other final, Timaru Boys High School showcased their prowess once again, securing a hard-earned win against St Bede's College. Backing up last year’s triumph, this young team was impressive and absolutely committed. At Connetics, our purpose is clear: Delivering energy solutions for a cleaner and brighter future. This commitment, along with supporting young people in our community, is reflected in our ways of working: - People Matter: We value and support our community, just as we do our teams. - Excellent Today: Striving for excellence in every endeavor, on and off the field. - Better Together: Celebrating teamwork and collaboration, which are at the heart of every success. - Make It Happen: Turning goals into reality through dedication and hard work. - Future Focused: Investing in the future, whether it’s through sustainable energy solutions or supporting young athletes. Thank you to all the teams, coaches, supporters and Canterbury Hockey for making this competition and event memorable. Here’s to a brighter future, both on the hockey field and in our communities! #AllWaysConnecting #CommunitySupport #FutureFocused #ExcellenceInAction

It was the perfect day to get outdoors for The Orion Group annual planting day last Thursday. This year a team from Connetics and Orion along with Selwyn District Council got together to plant over 1,200 native seedlings. The planting area out near the Irwell River was chosen as native planting is needed to help protect the waterways, birdlife and increase the biodiversity of native species in the area. Thank you to everyone involved for your mahi, it was great to share kai to cap off this special day.

Connetics Stringing Orion’s New 66kV: A Symphony in Motion! Last Thursday, after spending a significant portion of the day alongside colleagues from across The Orion Group and representatives from Selwyn District Council planting 1,400 native plants as part of the recloaking initiative at a reserve in Brookside, near the Irwell River, we made a brief stop on our return journey to Christchurch. Our purpose? To admire the orchestration of the ‘symphony’ in motion—the impressive operation led and project-managed by Connetics to string Orion NZ Ltd’s new 66kV line from our new Norwood zone substation to Brookside. Although we couldn’t capture the full magnificence of the moment in photos (the team was deep into a particularly delicate operation, and we didn’t want to risk causing a safety incident by entering the work site), what we saw was nothing short of extraordinary. The sight of a crane meticulously attaching the 66kV conductor to the new 30-meter steel monopoles was a stark reminder that this is far from an everyday task. It’s an operation that not only demands a good head for heights but also requires careful planning and precise handling of the lines themselves. While many are aware of the dangers posed by the accidental release of electrical energy and the challenges of working at height, in operations like this one, the safe management of mechanical energy is just as critical. Myself, along with several other members of The Orion Group—Karen Wiese, Merv McKay, Clayton Wallwork, Stephen Spence, and Josh Dickson from Connetics—spent a good 15 minutes watching this symphony in motion. Hats off to everyone involved! Having a skilled workforce across The Orion Group and our service delivery partners capable of executing such complex projects is essential. It enables Orion to continue fulfilling our critical role in supporting growth and maintaining a safe, reliable, and resilient network for the communities we serve. Ngā mihi nui, Nigel.
