"Wellington is dead," we keep hearing. But something's missing from this story: Innovation often flourishes in periods of scarcity and adversity. I’ve interviewed many of the capital’s innovators, who illustrate this so well. 🥜 Roman created Fix & Fogg in an empty lawn bowls club at night, while his wife was expecting their first child. 💰 Claire and James launched Hnry, Australasia's fastest-growing accounting firm, at their kitchen table – with an Excel spreadsheet and a one-page website. 🥤 Joe built Six Barrel Soda after working in hospo. He had no capital, no family money, and no fallback plan. 📈 Sonya was inspired to create Sharesies because she wanted to avoid spending $50 on dinner – and invest it instead. 🍺 Pete created Garage Project after Lion Nathan closed its brewery in Wellington in 2010, citing economic pressures. Yes, councils and governments need to enable economic activity. But they don't create businesses – people do. There's 550,000 people in the region. Many are doing it tough. But right now, new ideas are being hatched in kitchens and garages – incredible projects we haven't even heard about yet. Let's not lose sight of that. ☀️ #storytelling #entrepreneurship #innovation #wellington

👏 Proud moment alert! We're so excited to see students from Girls who Grow Aotearoa New Zealand take home the Wakatipu Community Foundation Rising Stars Awards. 🌱 Girls Who Grow entered our GovTech Accelerator back in 2022 to refine their vision and build a series of school imagination-centered workshops and sustainable farm immersions for young women aged 15-17. 👩🌾 🚜 Since then, the programme has seen hundreds of students from urban backgrounds learn more about the variety of career opportunities in the primary sector. They've recently been featured in RNZ's article "Country Life: Girls who Grow bridging the urban-rural divide for young women", which is also helping to ease climate anxiety, allowing students to see themselves as part of the solution. 📖 Have a read and check out what these amazing founders are doing: https://lnkd.in/g7wc_N9e #createivehq #innovation #startupfounders #girlswhogrow #govtech Wellington City Council WellingtonNZ Amazon Web Services (AWS), EndGame, Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment Aro Digital Jonnie Haddon Catherine van der Meulen Aimee Blake
When Girls who Grow Aotearoa New Zealand was taking its first steps and creating an approach to engaging young women into climate positive agriculture in the Creative HQ GovTech Accelerator, Rose Kidd from Wakatipu High School was the first teacher to respond and was open to exploring what the programme could look like in their school. That’s Rose pictured in the centre surrounded by 4 incredible leaders who are college students at the school and are just in the midst of polishing up their projects to present at Lake Hawea Station in December for a collective of local industry leaders and farmers to see how their drought solutions could be applied and scaled in the region. We are grateful for Rose’s relentless support in championing Girls who Grow to be a part of their school and continuing to drive it for the years to come. She is committed to the program being woven into their newly offered agriculture and horticulture studies. These students last Saturday took home the Wakatipu Community Foundation Queenstown Lakes District Council Rising Stars Awards for their innovative solutions to drought supported by Mountain Club . We are incredibly proud of their commitment to their projects and building meaningful solutions to regional environmental challenges. But now to hang up the frocks and put their heads down to study for exams before the exciting finale on 6th December back where it all began for Girls who Grow at Lake Hāwea Station Aimee Blake Ian Harvey Lisa Martin Rachel Perrett Renee De Luca Finn Ross Becks Smith Loshni Manikam Stuart Smith Hon.
