Today is World Mental Health Day, and it's a timely reminder of the importance of prioritising mental wellbeing in the workplace. In Australia during 2021-22, claims for mental health conditions led to a staggering loss of 584,029 working weeks—an issue that affects workers globally. 🚨 Week 2 of Safe Work Month shines a light on the often-overlooked psychosocial hazards that can silently impact our colleagues. Psychosocial hazards are anything that can harm an individual’s mental wellbeing, stemming from various sources: the design of work, the work environment, or interactions among colleagues. These hazards not only threaten mental health but can also lead to physical injuries. Did you know? On average, work-related psychological injuries require more time away from work and incur higher costs, placing a burden on individuals, families, and organisations alike worldwide. Scott Taylor CPP® 🎤🗣️🎙️ gave us so much to think about. We must be aware of people's behaviour before it escalates to violence or aggressive behaviours. All of our conference delegates will spend the coffee break observing each other and noticing: - baseline behaviour and deviations - self-pacifying behaviour - whether people are trying to blend in, but failing - stress behaviours such as heavy breathing - people's stance and use of space - whether people are closing off their power zones - facial microexpressions - head tilts can indicate vulnerability and stress. - holding phones showing discomfort - blink rates to see interest (and attraction 😜 ) The main things I will take with me from this session: 1. While we may lie with our words and faces, our body language often tells the truth. 2. Recognizing that not everyone's moral compass is aligned with ours is crucial to being prepared for violent behaviours. 3. How to avoid a body cavity search.
