𝗖𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗯𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 -> a bumper Architectural Movie Night in the Garden City last night! 135+ Christchurch architects and designers gathered on a wet 'n wild evening to watch 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙋𝙤𝙬𝙚𝙧 𝙤𝙛 𝙐𝙩𝙤𝙥𝙞𝙖: 𝙇𝙞𝙫𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙇𝙚 𝘾𝙤𝙧𝙗𝙪𝙨𝙞𝙚𝙧 𝙞𝙣 𝘾𝙝𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙞𝙜𝙖𝙧𝙝. 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝘂𝗹𝘀𝗲 -> one of the key factors impacting the New Zealand construction sector over the past year is the proportion of government-funded building consents.   𝗙𝗼𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀, government or KO social housing consents were just over 𝟲% of the total at year-end, down from over 9% in early 2024.    𝗡𝗼𝗻-𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 also declined, falling from around 25% to about 𝟭𝟱% of total consent value, as the new National administration paused several school and health projects in 2024.   Historically, in tougher economic times, government has chosen to support one of the two sectors as they did in the GFC. 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝘂𝗹𝘀𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 -> Construction cost inflation eases, now only 2% year on year. Industry feedback from builders and developers nationwide confirms overall activity has slowed, putting downward pressure on both costs and margins. This stability is encouraging. It allows those estimating the cost of building to have more certainty on future inflation, which in turn provides more confidence for buyers and lenders.
