NZ's independent electricity regulator - working to deliver a competitive, reliable and efficient electricity industry.
About us
The Electricity Authority Te Mana Hiko is an independent Crown entity responsible for regulating Aotearoa New Zealand’s electricity industry. What do we do? • We develop, administer and enforce the market rules that govern nearly every aspect of New Zealand’s electricity industry including generation, transmission, system operation, security of supply, market arrangements, metering, distribution and retail. • We contract service providers to operate the electricity market and system. • We analyse and monitor the performance of the market and the electricity industry and make the information available on our Electricity Market Information website: https://www.emi.ea.govt.nz/ • We help develop the industry through education, guidelines, information and model arrangements. • Our day-to-day work focuses on addressing key questions that affect the long-term benefit of electricity consumers. As NZ’s economy electrifies, more and new businesses are wanting to connect to the network. Today we released two consultation papers with proposals that aim to make the process to connect easier and faster, and with more efficient pricing. Getting the right rules in place will help lay the foundation to support more businesses and infrastructure to get connected, at an efficient price. In the last quarter, we've made significant progress on laying the foundations to establish the electricity market for the future: Market 2.0. We've enhanced information and transparency around price signals and improved access to risk management tools. This work will enable homes, businesses and industrials to have more choices to manage their own electricity use and put downward pressure on prices. Winter 2024 highlighted the risks of hedging after market stress is revealed. In this article we discuss this using data for offers made to energy purchasers that could have been used to hedge load in 2024, including offers from 2020 to August 2024: https://lnkd.in/eqgpF9zt #electricityindustry #regulation #eyeonelectricity

We’re improving regulations and processes for when a retailer seeks to operate on a distributor’s network. We've decided to amend regulations to improve the Default Distributor Agreement template, consumption data template and related clauses in the Electricity Industry Participation Code (effective 25 November 2024). These changes will benefit consumers through improved quality and reliability of electricity supply, more effective use of data for network management and lower costs through a more competitive, efficient industry. You can read more about this decision on our website: https://lnkd.in/gRNysNkz

The Energy Competition Task Force is requesting early input from stakeholders to help ensure that its level playing field measures work is comprehensive. We are specifically seeking stakeholder input on: - what level playing field measures we should be considering; - practical examples of level playing field measures being implemented, preferably in comparable overseas electricity markets; and - existing published work on level playing measures that stakeholders consider would usefully inform the Authority’s work. We invite interested parties to provide input by 5pm on Tuesday 5 November 2024. You can learn more on our website: https://lnkd.in/gVC-FypT

Great to see EECA (Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority) highlighting the savings on offer if we're smarter about electricity use: https://lnkd.in/gfyjuNKn Choosing to use electricity at off-peak times can help reduce your power bill - if you’re on a plan that rewards you for this. While these plans are increasingly available, the Energy Competition Task Force is considering making it a requirement for retailers above a certain size to offer ‘time-of-use pricing’ to their customers. Incentivising off-peak energy consumption can help reduce demand peaks, which can help drive lower prices for consumers. The Electricity Authority and Commerce Commission jointly established the Energy Competition Task Force to investigate ways to improve the performance of the electricity market: https://lnkd.in/g5QUdFT6 #energyfuture #electricityindustry #regulation

We're seeking feedback on proposed amendments to the Electricity Industry Participation Code to improve outage coordination. We want to strengthen outage coordination obligations and minimise the risk of disruption to consumers’ electricity supply. Have your say! Submissions are welcome by Friday 8 November 2024: https://lnkd.in/g93YU6Jj
