About us
The Electricity Authority Te Mana Hiko is an independent Crown entity responsible for regulating Aotearoa New Zealand’s electricity industry. What do we do? • We develop, administer and enforce the market rules that govern nearly every aspect of New Zealand’s electricity industry including generation, transmission, system operation, security of supply, market arrangements, metering, distribution and retail. • We contract service providers to operate the electricity market and system. • We analyse and monitor the performance of the market and the electricity industry and make the information available on our Electricity Market Information website: https://www.emi.ea.govt.nz/ • We help develop the industry through education, guidelines, information and model arrangements. • Our day-to-day work focuses on addressing key questions that affect the long-term benefit of electricity consumers. The Energy Competition Task Force is working at speed to identify options to enable new generators and independent retailers to enter, and better compete in the market, and to provide more options for electricity consumers. You can now find a calendar of our work programme on our website that includes consultation and decision timeframes: https://lnkd.in/g5QUdFT6 Subscribe to our Market Brief newsletter for updates on opportunities to engage with the Task Force programme: https://lnkd.in/gHSyavVb Commerce Commission #energycompetition #energyfuture

“It’s been a busy quarter for us with significant developments – the stress on the wholesale market, Energy Competition Task Force and Northland review. Like any organisation operating in a rapidly changing environment, we have to be smart about how we prioritise the work we’re doing. In our case, that means focusing in on the work that will most quickly and effectively deliver the largest benefit to electricity consumers. The result is a new priority work programme aligned with our vision and strategic outcomes, with projects grouped under six critical work streams.” Read Sarah Gillies full update on the quarter on our website: https://lnkd.in/gvbrBqPi

We’re seeking feedback on proposed changes to the Electricity Industry Participation Code to implement a hybrid forecasting arrangement for intermittent generators. We’re confident a hybrid forecasting arrangement will lead to consistently more accurate intermittent generation forecasts and offers. This will increase the accuracy of price signals, which contributes to the most efficient and lowest cost sources of generation being dispatched. This is a key initiative to support affordable electricity for consumers. We welcome submissions on this consultation by 15 November: https://lnkd.in/gnz728AG #forecasting #renewablegeneration

Thanks to everyone who joined our quarterly update last week. Our Chief Executive Sarah Gillies kicked off the session: “The rapid change in our sector places demands on the Authority to change the rules, and also to change the way we regulate - to be genuinely open, accessible and supportive of new ideas, to accelerate innovation and enable change. We’ve prioritised our work programme to align with our vision and strategic outcomes, and respond actively to industry developments and new information." Missed it? Today we approved an exemption to Part 6A of the Electricity Industry Participation Code, allowing electricity distributor WEL Networks to install two new solar power arrays and a battery storage system on their own network in the Waikato. This will provide just under 64MW worth of energy that can be stored and released into the market, as and when the region needs it most. Encouraging and enabling investment in local electricity generation is critical to building regional resilience. Considering and processing exemptions to the Code is a way that the Authority can enable market participants to invest in solutions that benefit electricity consumers (but would otherwise fall outside the current regulatory environment) and to test these investments and opportunities in the real world.
