Ministry for the Environment | Manatū mō te Taiao
Government Administration
A flourishing environment for every generation. He taiao tōnui mō ngā reanga katoa.
About us
Tiakina te taiao ki tōnui a Aotearoa. He whenua mana kura mo tangata. The Ministry’s role is to be a long-term steward for the environment, and is underpinned by the aspiration of making New Zealand the most liveable place in the world. Being good stewards means making sure future generations have the same opportunities we did, such as; access to healthy land, air and water, being surrounded by unique and diverse native flora and fauna, having outstanding scenery and recreation opportunities, living in thriving communities, benefitting from a strong economy and enjoying a connection to the environment that goes to the heart of who we are as Kiwis. The Ministry cannot achieve this alone. We need collaboration and innovation from all New Zealanders; across our forests, farms and factories, in our cities and in our homes. But we can help set the direction and inspire people to play their part and make the best decisions for their environment and country. Although we take a long term view, we are acting today. That’s because we know the full implications of the choices we make take time to bear fruit.

Recycling rules changed in February, and lids were a hot topic! So, what’s the deal with lids and kerbside recycling? 🤔 🚫 Lids can’t be recycled from home. Separate them from bottles, containers, and jars before recycling. Here’s why: 🛑 Lids can be either too small (like bottle lids) or too flat (like ice cream or margarine container lids) to be separated by machinery at recycling plants. Sorting machinery can mistake flat lids for paper, so they contaminate paper recycling. 💧 Lids can trap contents, making containers too heavy for air jets to sort or contaminating the recycling with leftover food. ⚠️ Screwed-on lids can pop off under pressure and injure recycling centre workers. However, some lids — like tin can lids — can be recycled if you go the extra mile. Rinse, push the lid inside the tin, and squash it securely. 🆕 Caps and Lids Recycling Scheme has launched. Drop off caps and lids at collection boxes in selected New World, PAK’nSAVE, and Four Square supermarkets in Auckland, Tauranga, and Christchurch, with more locations coming soon. 🔗 Find out where to drop off lids for recycling near you: #RecycleRight #RecyclingWeek2024

♻️🌿 It’s Recycling Week 🌿♻️ Let’s look at some of the ways you can go the extra recycling mile for items that aren’t accepted in your kerbside collections. 🥫 Leave the lids attached to your tins, rinse clean, and push the lid inside the can. Then the lids can be recycled, too. 🚫 Just because an item is not accepted for recycling at kerbside does not mean it cannot be recycled at all. Check with your local council for information on any drop-off recycling services in your area. 🌧️ Historic landfills and contaminated sites at risk from severe weather pose a threat to both communities and the environment. Storm surges, heavy rainfall, and flooding can compromise these sites, and there are hundreds of them across Aotearoa. The new Contaminated Sites and Vulnerable Landfills Fund helps councils clean up these vulnerable areas. Regional, unitary, and now territorial authorities can apply on behalf of landowners if their sites meet the eligibility criteria. Improvements to the motor vehicle fleet are helping to reduce air pollutant emissions in Aotearoa New Zealand! 🚗💨 That’s one of the findings from the Ministry for the Environment and Stats NZ’s latest three-yearly update on air quality in Aotearoa. Our air 2024 brings together updated data and research, which shows that air pollutant levels have decreased at most monitoring sites over the last eight years. However, some sites showed worsening air quality, while pollutant levels at sites where air quality improved were at times above levels in World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines. 🌍 For more info visit: https://lnkd.in/g5Q9KiHG 🔗 #AirQuality #SustainableNZ #OurAir2024
