New national direction is being developed to help councils manage risks from floods, landslides and other natural hazards. 📉 Development in high-risk areas without appropriate steps to address natural hazards can pose a risk to people and property. The Government is progressing regulation to provide direction to councils to consistently manage risks when planning for new land use activities. The National Direction for Natural Hazards is planned as part of work to improve the resource management system. We consulted on a proposed approach last year. Aotearoa New Zealand now has one of the best eDNA datasets in the world! ❇🌏 Thanks to a collaborative project involving Government agencies, local government, hapū and community groups, so far, more than 30,000 samples have been taken from across New Zealand. The results are rolling in, and eDNA is changing the how we monitor and protect our waterways. As the name suggests, eDNA refers to the tiny traces of genetic material left behind as living things pass through water, soil or air. It’s a non-invasive technique that can read the genetic code (or barcodes) of animals that live in a given area, capturing the DNA that is naturally shed. eDNA can help us better understand what’s going on, providing insights into ecosystem health and biodiversity that would be expensive using conventional methods. It is super low cost. The same sample can provide information on fish, bugs, plants, rats or deer - the list goes on. It can assess whether the system is dominated by native or exotic species, or by species that are pollution tolerant or highly sensitive. #CONSULTATION - you have until 5pm on Friday 23 August to provide feedback on a proposal to make temporary law changes to speed up flood works in Māngere. Māngere was particularly affected by the 2023 Auckland Anniversary floods and Cyclone Gabrielle, which left homeowners concerned about the impact future severe weather events could have on their homes. Developing new culverts, dams and other infrastructure will help to improve the flood resilience of these communities. The proposed law changes would enable Auckland Council to get on with the job of constructing these flood works this summer, giving homeowners more certainty about the future of their homes. The Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) is the Government's main tool to reduce emissions. It does this by putting a price on greenhouse gas emissions. To reduce net emissions, the ETS must be credible. Market participants – especially emitters – must be confident the investments they make to reduce emissions will be rewarded. As part of that, the Government today announced how many ETS units will be available for auction for the next five years. It also announced auction price controls.
