Today we released our latest survey data, showing Kiwis care about food waste and they want government funding for food rescue to be part of the solution. Our survey found: 🍏 73% of New Zealanders are concerned about food that could feed people ending up in landfill 🍏 75% agree the government should be doing more to prevent food that could feed people from ending up in landfill.  🍏 75% agree the government should contribute funding to food rescue. With government funding for food rescue set to expire in June, urgent action is needed. AFRA General Manager Iain Lees-Galloway joined @RNZ’s Nine to Noon to discuss these findings, the scale of the issue, and why the government must provide sustainable, baseline funding for food rescue in Budget 2025. New Zealanders are clear: food rescue should be funded. The government must step up in Budget 2025 to ensure food rescue can keep delivering for our communities. Hunger is on the rise, but so is our ability to respond. Here are 5 incredible acts of generosity I’ve witnessed in February… 🍸Clinton Farley’s team at The Hotel Britomart organised for $1 from every cocktail to be donated to Fair Food NZ. 🏃♀️38 amazing people sponsored our #roundthebays team, helping 239 families get fresh groceries. 🍓480 kilos of strawberries were picked by our volunteers in one Saturday. 🍔 50 people joined us for a bbq to say thank you for the 16,498 hours of mahi aroha they donated last year! 🫧 Our neighbours Ellie Brade at Cleanery donate kitchen and bathroom products to keep our Hub clean and share this premium product with our community through GoGenerosity.

We love an excuse for hands-on craft at Daylight, and we couldn’t think of a better organisation to roll up our sleeves for. Every month Fair Food NZ collect approximately 50.7 tonnes of food destined for landfill from our biggest supermarkets. As this precious kai approaches its use-by date, volunteers sort, save and send it to New Zealander's in need So, we asked them to hold onto a bit of the left over packaging to create a campaign that showcases the incredible volume of food they rescue every day. A beautiful collage based poster set, packed with purpose for a group of absolute legends 🥫 🥑 🖼️ ❤️

NGOs are often encouraged to be “non-political” while also somehow creating systems change. We are on the frontlines of the impact of inequity, but when we talk honestly about solutions or barriers, it makes people uncomfortable. We get to observe a lot about a team when they come to volunteer with us. Every group we’ve had from Fonterra has been excellent: lots of initiative, humility, hard work, and a genuine team culture. Thank you to Rosy Herstell and Lorren Hawkins for gathering the team and the Fonterra ingredients to make Christmas custard and sponge cake for families who would otherwise miss out.
