Human-centred design is at the heart of who we are at Fisher & Paykel, and the beautiful ethos behind Architects not Architecture is one that resonates deeply with us. For those reasons, we were delighted to support the AnA London 2024 Talks at the Royal Academy of Arts recently. The evening was a true celebration of the creative spirit, with speakers Sumita Singha OBE from Ecological Architects, Ole Sheeren of Büro Ole Scheeren, and Chris Precht of Studio Precht. Exploring their experiences and influences with honesty, humour, and vulnerability, they shared a unique insight into the person, rather than the project, who has shaped our world. • On Australia’s Gold Coast, the Mermaid Beach House is an extensive renovation of an existing house built in the 1980s. Now a contemporary family home that pays homage to its stunning location steps from the Pacific Ocean, it is distinguished by intelligent planning and thoughtful material combinations. Working within the limitations of the 40-year-old building brought both challenges and opportunities to the design process. The resulting scope focused on creating a visual cohesion between the house’s materials, and maximising the physical and visual connection to the beach through a series of minor yet impactful changes to the layout. In Singapore, a rare and heritage-listed bungalow gets a contemporary addition and makeover by local firm K2LD. Along with renovating the interior of the old house, the architects developed an innovative new extension that now wraps around its back and side, creating space for a typical multigenerational Singaporean family with grandparents, parents and children. One conservation requirement was that the two structures could not physically touch, giving rise to the glass connecting structure that allows flow between while almost merging into the environment. Sited on a north-facing ridge amid dense bushland, the Erskine River House by Kerstin Thompson Architects was conceived as a place of seclusion and security. Constructed using pre-cast concrete panels, its exterior is both deliberately monolithic and compact. Its northern elevation is broken up by large areas of glazing which can completely retract, opening the interior to the landscape and valley below. The interior of the long, narrow structure is divided into five separate nooks, while the back wall of each nook sweeps around in a generous curve, encasing the occupant and directing the view outwards past the northern elevation. • A modern, minimalist concrete building surrounded by a hazy, natural landscape with a prominent eucalyptus tree in the foreground. The setting suggests a cool, misty environment, emphasizing the contrast between the sharp architectural lines and the soft, organic forms of the surrounding foliage.
    • A minimalist hallway featuring tall wooden cabinetry on both sides. The floor is polished concrete and the wall at the end of the hallway has a rough concrete texture. On the left, a wooden bench sits flush against the wall, with a small abstract wooden sculpture and a rounded stone-like object on top. The lighting is soft and emanates from above, casting gentle shadows. The atmosphere is serene and modern.
    • Interior scene with a textured brown sofa in the foreground. On a shelf behind it are three decorative bottles beside a white vase holding delicate branches with white blooms. The background features a grey concrete wall with a streak of light.
    • A modern, minimalist living space characterized by concrete walls, a prominent black metal stove with a visible fire, and natural light casting shadows on a smooth floor, complemented by wooden chairs and a plush sofa in the background.
    • A wooden cabinet with brushed metal handles is partially open, revealing stacks of minimalist black dinnerware on the shelves of an adjacent sleek, black storage unit in a contemporary kitchen setting.

As a human-centred business with a passion for innovation, we were proud to join up with DYP as part of Techweek NZ 2024 for an evening of sharing and collaboration at our Dunedin Design Centre. An exclusive tour of our facilities offered select guests a rare glimpse into the workings of a leading global appliance manufacturer. Presented by our people, we took a new generation of aspiring engineers and product designers through Fisher & Paykel’s product development capacity and goals, as well as engaging with their inspiring ambitions. A huge thank you to TechStep for their generous support of this event and the opportunity to share our vision with the future of our industry. #fisherpaykel

This family home in the Brooklyn neighbourhood of Clinton Hill tests the scope of adaptive re-use by utilising mass-timber construction in the renovation of a 19th-century carriage house. In creating the first single-family residence in New York to fully explore the potential of this sustainable, low-impact method, Schiller Projects has set an important precedent for housing in urban environments. Mass timber is a construction system that uses standard concrete and steel with compressed, engineered wood in large panels, columns, or beams. It offers the same structural load-bearing capacity as other materials and construction techniques, but it is far lighter and less carbon-intensive.
