We started Flight Coffee back in 2009 in Mum’s garage, the same spot where we played the drums as kids. These days you’ll find us in slightly fancier garages in Wellington and Auckland, as well as producing coffee in countries the world over.

In our latest blog post Richard Corney goes deep into the challenges being faced by both NZ coffee roasters and hospitality operators and why the price of coffee needs to change to ensure the industry survives and thrives. "From multinationals to boutique roasters, there is no escaping the fact that coffee is the most expensive it’s ever been to produce, especially so when coupled with increase in operation costs and other factors like freight and increased utility and manufacturing costs. What does this mean for cafes and consumers? The price of coffee must go up both by the kilo and the cup. The coffee industry cannot sustain the cost pressures on their own. I was interviewed by RNZ this morning on the current state of the coffee market and the subsequent state of hospitality in NZ and the immense cost pressures facing the industry. With an unhinged C market, volitile dollar and frost concerns in Brazil, coffee roasters are once again under immense pressure to manage margin risk. Coupled with NZ being in recession and public sector job cuts, the question is how much can the hospitality industry sustain the immense cost pressures and down turn in sales currently being experienced.
