Friday Feels: Celebrating Our First Distinguished Fellow As FMANZ grows in both age and scale, we've introduced a new accolade that surpasses our existing honours: the Distinguished Fellow award. This recognition celebrates individuals whose contributions have made a lasting impact and will inspire future generations. We could not be more delighted that our first-ever Distinguished Fellow has been granted to someone whose presence is truly integral to FMANZ – our very own Jonathan Jepson, current FMANZ CPD and Assessment Manager and founding member. Jonathan has made a remarkable and enduring contribution to FMANZ through a wide range of leadership roles, strategic development and hands-on committee work with his efforts playing a pivotal role in shaping FMANZ’s trajectory. The organisation simply wouldn’t be the same without him. An absolute trooper, he’s always there with thoughtful, sage advice and a steady hand. A true cornerstone of FMANZ, he has been with the organisation from the very beginning, and even in retirement, he continues to dedicate an incredible amount of time and energy to ensure our success – a consistent contribution spanning nearly two decades. Wednesday’s words of inspiration…. Today, we reflect on the impactful words of our final FM Summit speaker, Bruce Pilbrow, CEO of Spirit of Adventure Trust, who spoke about courage and vulnerability. He emphasised, “NZ would not move without FMers…if you’re working in this space, my encouragement to you is to do the mahi but look for the teachable moments as well…become change makers, become the movers that go, you know what, like Spirit we comply, but we can be better.” These fitting remarks remind us to prioritise courage over comfort as we work to make a difference, much like the Trust inspires Aotearoa’s youth through transformative voyages. Choosing Spirit of Adventure Trust as our charity partner for this year’s Summit was an easy decision, not only due to the alignment with our ‘Te Rehutai bow-wave’ theme, but because their values resonate deeply with ours. Their boat, Spirit of New Zealand - Te Waka Herenga Tangata o Aotearoa, also serves as a unique facility in its own right. By using the power of the sea and the facilities on board their vessel, they help young people grow and reach their full potential with life-changing ocean voyages. As facilities managers, we appreciate the importance of spaces that inspire and nurture growth, and we look forward to building a lasting partnership with the Trust in the future. For those who missed Bruce’s inspiring address, check out the full presentation here: https://lnkd.in/gWDMGqyj A special mention to our charitable arm, FMANZ Foundation, for supporting Bruce’s presentation. The quality of the air we breathe inside our buildings has consequences for the health, wellbeing, learning, and productivity of every single one of us and everyone we love. In Aotearoa, the evidence that does exist indicates that our indoor air quality just isn’t good enough. That's why we’re excited to see our indoor air quality alliance gaining momentum, urging the government to set and implement improved indoor air quality standards for all public buildings. On the back of our powerful new report ‘Time to Clear the Air: The Economic Benefits of Improving NZ’s Indoor Air Quality,’ released to coincide with last week’s FM Summit, dozens of organisations have already added their voice to the cause. Co-authored by Economist Shamubeel Eaqub and supported by ActivePure by Big Blue, Jackson Engineering Advisers Ltd and Tether Ltd, the report reveals improving the quality of the air people breathe inside offices and schools would reduce sickness and improve concentration levels so much that it could benefit New Zealand to the tune of $1billion. Read the full background story here: https://lnkd.in/gAB3FGAn We’re grateful to experts like Distinguished Professor Lidia Morawska and Economist Shamubeel Eaqub for addressing this crucial issue at Summit. Special thanks to Tether Ltd for helping us monitor the air quality of our Summit venue - the Viaduct Event Centre. Our dashboard photos reveal a healthy environment! It's also great to see the media embracing this important issue. We are still riding the high from last week’s FM Summit and want to extend a huge thank you to all our outstanding speakers. Initial feedback indicates that this year's Summit achieved the highest ratings for both speaker quality and topic diversity. Our speakers addressed a wide array of FM competencies from navigating the economy, advancing indoor air quality, empowering facilities managers, to leveraging AI, data for strategic decision-making and special sessions addressing biodiversity, sustainability, and the role of privacy in facilities management. Your time, energy, and insights are greatly appreciated! A special shout-out to our opening speaker James Laughlin, who perfectly set the tone with his on-theme address. He was incredibly well-received, earning one of the highest rankings among our speakers. Of course, we couldn’t deliver such a quality line-up of presenters if it weren’t for our amazing main Summit sponsors, so special thanks to HydroVac Limited, our Platinum Sponsor, and to our Diamond Sponsors, Johnson Controls, Kiwi Maintenance Group Ltd, KONE and MacMillan Plumbing & Gas Ltd. That’s a wrap on our biggest ever FM Summit! Over two packed days, we've been treated to a sparkling array of inspirational speakers set against the shimmering waters of the mighty Waitematā. It's been an incredible journey riding the Summit bow-wave with you all! We're thrilled to have heard from esteemed speakers like Chris Penk MP, Minister for Building and Construction, who acknowledged the vital role of facilities managers in ensuring buildings perform well. Economist, Shamubeel Eaqub, highlighted the importance of better indoor air quality, while Distinguished Professor Lidia Morawska, named one of Time Magazine's most influential people, laid out the science behind improving air quality and the crucial role of facilities managers in making change happen. An ocean of other issues filled presentations today. Our international panel spoke to the global common challenges and opportunities in ‘Steering facilities management into the future,’ while New Zealand A.I Founder, Justin Flitter, helped us navigate the power and potential of harnessing the waves of AI. The day was topped off with an insightful deep dive into embedding privacy as a core consideration into FM by Michael Webster, Privacy commissioner for NZ. Bruce Pilbrow, CE of Spirit of Adventure Trust left us with a timely reminder of the importance of ‘embracing courage and vulnerability.’ As we bid farewell, a shoal of sails is gliding across the water, right outside our venue. As the wind picks up, their momentum, just like ours, is growing. Photo credit: Bex Charteris #FMANZ #facilitiesmanagement #FMSUMMIT
