About us

Gisborne District Council is the unitary authority for Gisborne/Tairāwhiti New Zealand. We are both the district and regional council. Tairāwhiti is the first place in the world to see the rising sun and our region covers the largest land area in the eastern North Island, covering 8355 square kilometres with 1889km of roads. Gisborne is a vibrant and progressive community. We're also a culturally significant region with Gisborne being the site of the first meeting between Māori and European. Our people are diverse and our heritage rich with history. We're proud to be amongst New Zealand’s sunniest places and enjoy warm summers and mild winters. Our attractions include world class surf breaks, a stunning coastline of sandy beaches, natural bush, a thriving wine and honey industry and export-quality produce. Tairāwhiti is New Zealand’s preferred region for lifestyle based on the quality of our environment, the enterprise of our people and our unique Eastern location. Gisborne District Council is proud to be able to represent its people and environment and to lead the community now and into the future. We work alongside our communities, collaborating, listening and seeking advice. Tairāwhiti Tāngata, Tairāwhiti Taonga, Tairāwhiti Wawatā, Tairāwhiti First! First to see the light; First choice for people and lifestyle; First choice for enterprise and innovation; First place for the environment, culture and heritage.
