Here’s why, at $999, Cactus Outdoor makes no money from canvas down jackets. Probably the toughest on the planet they replace multiple purchases so reduce landfill. And they’re worn from Antarctica to the Himalayas. #environmentalsustainability #tough #reducewaste

A diatribe about why we at Cactus Outdoor won't discount our Canvas Down jacket, the toughest jacket on earth... https://lnkd.in/g82bziW6 It's in the title so we aren't going to muck around. Our Canvas Down Jackets won't be going on sale and here's why. Short story: We make no money on them. Long story to explain what is a crappy business model: Read on. In 2015 after 18 months of prototyping, a few beers, plenty of duct tape along with some intimate moments with a few matagouri bushes, we launched what we reckon is the world's toughest puffer. 12oz pack canvas on the outside and a 750 loft white goose down on the inside, along with plenty of other super tough features. These beauties are handmade right here in Christchurch and engineered to withstand the most brutal of environments they're put in. After launching these jackets our customers went crazy for them. Now our jackets are worn globally by farmers, musterers, shepherds, tradies and even by staff down in Antarctica (who purchase these puppies out of their own funds despite being issued uniforms). Contrary to popular belief, as sales spiked, so did the cost of production. Since 2015 the cost of labour, raw materials, and freight has increased exponentially. In an effort to remain as transparent as possible, these jackets are so low margin, we rely on other products to keep the business afloat. Keep in mind, any margin we do get helps cover the cost of business, which includes everything from staff salaries and shop rent to loo paper for Cactus HQ (we're not yet staunch enough to use canvas offcuts for that). Only the money left over after this is our profit. The challenge here is being able to continue to craft these incredible garments for our customers, but at a price that isn’t hiked to maximize profits. Your standard retail margin would see this jacket double in price overnight. When you buy a Canvas Down Jacket from us, you're directly supporting Kiwi-made and while we can't offer you a discount on them, know that your Cactus puffer will last longer than anything else on the market. Just like splashing out on a new John Deere or Hilux, splash out on a decent bit of kit and it'll do the job you need it to do.

Proud. Start-ups and purpose-driven businesses are tough. Really tough. Resilience, grit and determination help. But knowing we make a tiny difference in overcoming humanity's greatest challenge is a good way to get out of bed each day. We literally set unachievable goals. Yet the incredible GreenHalo team generally achieves them. That's in no small part due to Product Manager, Charlotte Becconsall. She rarely tells her team what to do and has mastered the art of asking questions. It creates new possibilities, empowerment, buy-in, and stronger teamwork. Something for every leader to reflect on. GreenHalo is 100% built on our customers' feedback. We're so grateful of your commitment (and sometimes patience!) to our vision. All the while, the Ember Technology team provides the engine and platform for GreenHalo to do its thing. The team sacrifice a lot. Tom Cawood, fellow Director, and I have been in business for more than 10 years and never had an argument. Incredible to work with such a supportive partner who's willing to invest so much into what we believe in. Thanks Project Management Institute of New Zealand and Millpond for the nomination. Congratulations to award winner, Fonterra. They worked with 1,500 contractors in a multi-million dollar decarbonisation boiler conversion project and thoroughly deserved the win. Chris Bailey GreenHalo Founder Our mission is to support and grow the community of Green Angels. There are more Green Angels behind this nomination that you'd imagine. #proud #environmentalsustainability #carbonfootprint #carbonaccounting

Nature Suffers In Recessions There’s a saying, “You need to be black to be green”. Profit drives investment and sustainability is no exception. Last week, unemployment data was more positive than expected and green shoots are appearing in the housing market. Inflation is a touch higher than expected so all eyes will be on the Reserve Bank’s official cash rate announcement on 28 February. Before getting too excited, remember we’re in a technical recession. The government has cancelled its last four quarterly carbon credit auctions because they didn’t reach the minimum reserve price. Green bonds globally were down in the second half of last year. The current carbon credit price is trading on the open market at about $73/tonne, which has risen by about $10/tonne since August but that is still relatively soft. GreenHalo has been working with some NZX Limited listed companies where sustainability budgets are tight beyond belief. One Sustainability Manager can’t get enough resource to complete their mandatory reporting requirements so has been working six or seven days per week for months. Reality bites environmental sustainability hard during tough economic times. Let’s hope the economy takes a positive turn shortly … but without the high interest rates, please. I reckon GreenHalo builds software faster than anyone I know. Bold statement! But now backed as a finalist for the Project Management Institute of New Zealand ESG Awards category. We're totally blown away 😃 The tux will be dusted off on 22 Feb and we're in great company. Other nominees are Fonterra, Napier City Council for cyclone recovery work and Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency. Thanks to James Dobson and Millpond for the nomination, to our customers who tell us what to build and to the amazing team at GreenHalo and Ember Technology. Hard to believe we've developed market-leading carbon accounting software in less than 18 months. Frustration or Optimism? GreenHalo's marketing contractor was appointed on a recommendation of the guy sitting beside me during a QTN-CHC flight.  Yesterday on the same flight, I sat beside the Director of one of NZ’s largest companies and dirtiest carbon emitters.  He was also connected to a large sheep & beef station.  He was a nice guy and knowledgeable about emissions so the scene was set for a lively discussion. Frustratingly, he believes carbon reduction was mostly ‘pulling an invisible rabbit out of a hat’ to satisfy contract obligations.  I could tell he was struggling to get beyond the financial impact on NZ Inc and his company.  He was frustrated about remaining competitive in the market and wondered why NZ should be so compliant when other countries aren’t.  He was frustrated and our conversation was frustrating. And then, as we approached landing, he confessed he was actively supporting his company’s emission reduction initiatives, that he has owned two Teslas and always considers his carbon emissions in holiday choices.  “Well, you have to be a leader”, he said.  We agreed there is no overnight fix to emissions reduction and that a steady change in behaviour gives hope to humanity. This high-rolling Director was actually an environmental supporter, but the pace of technology and collaborative progress was leaving a bitter taste in his mouth.  After all our debate, I left the airport feeling optimistic about corporate intent. Chris Bailey GreenHalo Founder Our mission is to support & grow the community of Green Angels.  This corporate director is an unlikely candidate but is doing his best to balance carbon reduction with commercial reality. #environmentalsustainability #corporateintent #carbonreduction #carbonaccounting

From the 1st February 2024 (next Thursday) recycling will be the same across Aotearoa New Zealand for council managed kerbside collections. Plastics 1,2 and 5, paper, cardboard and cans only. Here's a little tip, remove all lids and dispose of them in the landfill (lids are too small to be baled with other plastics). Visit your local council website, share with colleagues, friends and family. With this in mind, I've put together a few tips to avoid and reduce having to recycle in the first place. 🍶 Refill as much as possible: We visit our local Bin Inn and GoodFor. I think I've been using the same olive oil glass bottle for 4+ years. 📦 Buy in bulk: Bulk buying reduces the amount of plastic as opposed to buying a small bag at the supermarket and saves money. 🥛 If you drink oat, almond, rice, or soy milk you're likely buying Tetra Pak packaging which cannot be recycled but Tetra Pak has been working with Save Board to create drop-off points around the country. Find out more here - https://lnkd.in/gqVTR39Z 📃 Be organised: If I'm rushing I'll usually forget my jars or even forget what I need. Take your time, write a list and then shop. Here's a peak in my pantry 👀

Why are Science-Based Carbon Emissions Targets so important now? Ben Ryan was a recent General Manager - Product at Kathmandu and produced a merino clothing line that was sourced and manufactured in Aotearoa.  He was big on provenance, sustainability and lowering the carbon footprint in the dirty world of apparel.  This great kiwi is now Global Vice President at Salomon and lives near the French Alps.  Ah, the life! Responding to one of my recent LinkedIn posts, Ben noted the importance of the Science Based Targets initiative relating to carbon emissions.  I promised to elaborate. SBTi is a NGO established in 2015.  It helps companies set emission reduction targets in line with climate science and the Paris Agreement goal of keeping global temperature rise below 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.   Setting a SBT is a five step process 🌳 Commit: submit a letter establishing your intent to set a science-based target 🌳 Develop: work on an emissions reduction target in line with the SBTi’s criteria 🌳 Submit: present your target to the SBTi for official validation 🌳 Communicate: announce your target and inform your stakeholders 🌳 Disclose: report company-wide emissions and track target progress annually   The SBTi is a corporate climate action NGO that works in partnership with the United Nations Global Compact, World Resources Institute, the WWF and others.  It is part funded by IKEA Foundation, Amazon, Bezos Earth Fund and Rockefeller Brothers Fund.   The SBTi does not currently assess targets for cities, local governments, public sector institutions, educational institutions or non-profit organizations.   If you’re thinking of setting a carbon emissions target, you don’t need Ben Ryan’s understanding of sustainability nor his commitment to provenance.  You can simply be guided at sciencebasedtargets.org.   Chris Bailey GreenHalo Founder Our mission is to support and grow the community of Green Angels. Ben didn’t start his career in environmental sustainability but is a living example of the impact we can have. #carbonaccounting #environmentalsustainability #sciencebasedtargetinitiative
