The seventh annual China International Import Expo is being held in Shanghai this week. This year, almost 70 New Zealand companies will participate, with a total of 3,400 exhibitors and 410,000 visitors expected. New Zealand Trade and Agriculture Minister, Todd McClay, will lead the trade delegation followed by a visit to Guangzhou. "China is our largest export market accounting for $38 billion in two-way trade. This is a significant economic partnership for both countries," he said. In last year’s Expo, organisers claimed a total of  $US 78.41 billion worth of tentative deals had been reached for one-year purchases of goods and services. Shanghai is the world’s largest shipping port, with the equivalent 49.16 million 20-foot containers processed in 2023. Delta Air Lines have restored their flights between Los Angeles and Auckland Airport. This will have a positive effect in terms of price and availability for airfreight to and from the United States. Their schedule for November shows daily flights between the two cities on their 'widebody' Airbus 350-900. New Zealand has now signed a Free Trade Agreement with the Gulf Cooperation Council, adding to the one it signed earlier with the United Arab Emirates. The GCC consists of six of the world's wealthiest countries: Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Together with the UAE trade agreement, the GCC FTA will remove tariffs on 50.8% of our trade into the Gulf region when they enter into force, rising to 99 percent over 10 years. New Zealand’s exports to the GCC were worth $2.6 billion in the year to June 2024. It's important to understand that the deals will not enter into force until all countries have ratified them, and this could take up to two years. Israel’s recent airstrikes against Iran are a new escalation in the Middle East conflict, and there is a possibility of more disruption to global supply chains. Iranian-backed Houthi rebels started targeting global shipping in the Red Sea last year. As a result, many companies, including major firms like Maersk, have largely avoided the area, choosing instead to reroute around the Cape of Good Hope instead of using the Suez canal. This detour can add up to 10 days to travel times and significantly increase costs. The latest round of fighting between and Iran and Israel could lead to an escalation of Houthi attacks and further shipping delays. Europe, the UK, and North Africa, which are reached through the Red Sea and the Suez canal. are a sizable source of goods trade for New Zealand. In the year to September 2023, 11% ($7.7bn) of New Zealand’s goods exports and 20% ($15.7bn) of goods imports were traded with these regions.
