The Gift that keeps on giving! 😊 🙏 "Te Ara", the multi award winning documentary I worked on as a Director of Photography for Greenstone, and that follows the inspiring Holly Beckham and Lydia Bradey (the first woman to summit everest without oxygen) as the pair embark on a journey of self discovery through mountaineering, is a finalist for Best Cinematography and Best Direction from fellow colleague Alexis Smith, at the NZ Web Fest. So humbled for yet another recognition of what has been one of the most challenging projects to film ever. Making a movie is something that is very hard to articulate to people that are not in the industry... I still get surprised after all these years on what it takes everytime I go through the process. There is a good reason for all those names on the credits at the end! It's literally an insane task at times! But making a movie where most of the filming happens in an hostile environment like the alpine environment of New Zealand is completely different experience. Trying to capture that from the eye of a cinematographer and trying to bring beauty to every shot whilst on the move, carrying all your survival and technical camera gear, being cold, being limited in resources like batteries, no sound engineer or AC and still being true to a story that matters, is a completely different challenge. I loved every step of the way, but seeing the recognition truly makes it more worth it and energizes me to continue to pursue this craft with fierce determination despite the many challenges it often presents. I am extremely proud of the visuals we created. From the beautifully crafted human vs landscape, interview looks or action shots, this series saw it all and I had to tap into all of my skills and more. I believe it tells a story even just in the images. Check it for yourself and let me know! Thank you NZ Web Fest! May this story continue to touch and inspire many lives out there, and show that "there is always another way"! #filmmaking #cinematographer #KatalystMedia #Greenstone #PedroPimentel #dop #Wanaka #NewZealand #finalist #awards #cinematography

7 years in the making!... #beinghuman And just under a week to go for the World Premiere at the New Zealand Mountain Film Festival of our upcoming documentary "Being Human". A story of Love, Loss, Grief, Community, Determination, Vulnerability and ultimately being just HUMAN! Yes! A.I. will unlikely have these challenges! 🙂 Stay tuned! Lots more material is coming your way! Maybe hit that like and subscribe button if you are curious! ... When I look back and connect the dots (like a wise man said... do you know who?), it's strange sometimes to understand how the universe aligns people, moments, and sliding doors that create the spark of an idea in a new direction and with relentless momentum. This is one of those. It started with Joshua Davern, James Merryweather, Bethan Frugtniet and Ben Carter. From a story that I have been longing to share for so long and not knowing how... Chase Jarvis and Sonia Kiki Jones Art introducing me to the poetry of IN-Q and feeling re-energised to create something, to a video collab with IN-Q and finding the perfect words for the Aurora Videos, to finally decide that IT WAS TIME. While I am sure there are still a few great doco stories that I would like and will produce, I have a strong feeling that it will take some time before I find something with this level of depth, meaning and span across such a long period of life. While disguised under the beauty of the great New Zealand outdoors and some would say "futile pursuits", this film is a very RAW and authentic story that is very close to my heart... And for that reason, it is an invitation for you, the audience, to connect with your own hearts, and your emotions.... Your personal and unique story! Like Chase Jarvis puts it so well, "In the particular, lies the universal!". If you ever been in love, lost someone you cared for deeply, or somehow struggled in life in some form or shape... Maybe you'll find something that resonates in this one. From me, Andra Whipple, Sonia Kiki Jones Art and all those that made this possible, we truly hope you enjoy it... And who knows, you might just know someone that needs to watch it. If you haven't yet... The challenges of being a professional photon hunter is how hard it is to find a balance between capturing a moment for "eternity" or simply enjoy it! Do we take all the guns out or just enjoy it with a few phone snaps! I am grateful we ended up coming back to get some extra pieces of gear while still found moments of just lying down on the grown contemplating what was happening in the universe! :)

The last weekend's (May 12th 2024) geomagnetical extreme 5 (G5) storm hit our planet in a way that created something not seen, some say, for over 21 years. Some say even more! Wth no moon, and almost no clouds in the sky around here we were blessed with the most mystical experience I have ever witnessed... It was time to get out there and brave the extreme cold we were also being "gifted" with! :) For those that stayed up through the late hours of the morning the aurora display was almost a 360 degree experience that gave it almost a feeling of "end of the world"! :) It is really hard to describe the feeling of the conversations I have had post this mystical experience! But it seems to me that the range of experiences that were had on this night really spans across a very broad spectrum! While some saw a dim glow here and there, some didn't get to see anything, others (me included!), decided to voice to those that were around me at the time, the fact that if at each new round of aurora explosions, through the late hours of the night, the intensity was getting stronger and stronger... it wouldn't be dumb to maybe say some last words of gratitude to those around me just in case we are about to be blasted by something that would obliterate us off this planet! Lol! :) Laugh at will! But while, due to the nature of my craft, I am surrounded in my social feeds by insanely talented folks at capturing what we just witnessed, I truly don't feel that any time lapses and insanely beatiful photos that I would love to have on my wall (Nat Warburton probs got my favourite one around here!) really did justice to the fast movement of the particles and lights in the sky we saw. With that in mind, I am slowly processing some video that I am hoping can show all those friends I tried to explain what words can't quite describe, a little glimpse of the real time visual display we were gifted by mother nature! Either this becomes a recurrent thing every year (as a friend suggested!)Prue Beams, or a one off in a lifetime experience... I am truly grateful to Sonia Kiki Jones and Globo Robo for somehow pushing me to endure the extreme cold to go watch what iI thought was going to be just another faint experience of the aurora here in the fairly high latitudes of NZ. :) Until the videos come out... Enjoy some of my favourite still frames from that night. Have fun and let me know in the comments your best description of what you saw! See if you found better words than me. :)
