We speak to Elyjana Roach, Director of Community Regeneration, Masterplanning & Design - Central Pacific Collective for "30 stories for 30 years". After leaving the Victoria University of Wellington with a Masters degree in Architecture, she was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship, which saw her further her architectural studies in urban design at Harvard University. Elyjana received a prestigious travelling fellowship. Elyjana went on to work as an instructor in urban design at Harvard, and then at a practice in New York City, designing for the American west. The work was interesting and incredibly fun, she says. But something was missing. “I said ‘this is not my community.’ [The overseas experience] broadened my perspective but also narrowed my focus. "30 stories for 30 years" this week we speak to Patrick Watta (2019) Lead Quantity Surveyor at Miles Construction Unlike most candidates – who dress their very best in school uniform or maybe a suit – Patrick presented in muddy work boots, shorts and a high-vis vest. No wonder he wore what he did: Patrick had come straight from working on a building site for the interview that would change his life. “You’re part of a cohort that is now 30 years old. It is hard to believe that we are almost about to wrap up our "30 stories for 30 years" as the final countdown is on for our big celebration! We have a few incredible stories yet to come, including the inspiring Raukura Turei (2006). Raukura combines both art and architecture by having at least one dedicated painting day a week, alongside her role as a principal at Monk Mackenzie. Her art adorns the walls of many significant galleries around the country. “I haven’t been afraid to take risks,” says Raukura. “Something my mother instilled in me was a sense of independence – especially in terms of financial independence. So that’s what enabled me to travel after high-school and jump into whatever creative path beckoned.” Check out the full article on our website. On 21st August, before the mid-semester break, Colliers one of the Trust's sponsors hosted a fantastic networking event for The University of Auckland property students and the AUPSS club at their Auckland head office. It was a great opportunity to have insightful conversations with leading industry professionals, all while enjoying the amazing views from their office. We have been firing on all cylinders while our Study Award applications came flying through over the last few weeks, putting a pause on our "30 stories for 30 years". To press play on the pause is an inspiring story about the link between a Keystone Trust alumni and student who are both working with Keystone sponsors! Alumni, Mariam Matti (2016), Associate at Greenwood Roche and current student, Emily Beniamin (2022), BProp/LLB at The University of Auckland and Law Clerk at TBB share their connection through similar backgrounds. “Mariam has walked me through a lot of stuff at university, and it’s been really reassuring having her alongside. We’re more like friends,” says Emily, who is full of admiration for her mentor. “Mariam’s career has grown like a novel. I would like to have the same success as her.” Mariam says: “I feel like she’s my younger sister.
