Updates

  • We have some exciting news! As Queenstown continues to grow, so do the educational needs of our community. We’re proud to announce that Liger Leadership Academy is supporting the launch of Queenstown’s first charter school, which will be operated by Manawaroa Education and use the Liger Learning Framework! Just as we have done since 2021, this future-focused charter school will provide innovative, project-based learning experiences embedded in the Queenstown community, helping our young people develop the skills they need to thrive in a rapidly changing world. But we need your support to bring this to life! Manawaroa Education has started a petition to establish the school, and we need your voice to show that Queenstown is ready for more educational options. Please share this petition and post around with your networks! https://lnkd.in/gFQA6CfY In the meantime, Liger will be operating as usual at our current facility in Five Mile. In fact, our founders Trevor and Agnieszka Gile have just announced that they are personally gifting 10 full scholarships for new students who register to enrol for 2025. You can start the application process by expressing interest on our website! www.ligeracademy.org.nz

  • As technological advancements accelerate all around us, the challenge isn't just how to keep up, but how to prepare learners to lead the way. We're excited to announce the continuation of Liger Academy's Future Series, now reimagined as 'Fridays for the Future.' This initiative is designed to empower our students to become architects of the future by understanding and harnessing the potential of emerging technologies for positive change. We are honoured to welcome AJ Mason, a distinguished Kiwi Technology Strategist and Astrophysicist, to lead this series. Under his guidance, our students will explore cutting-edge fields such as AI & Robotics, Biotech, the Metaverse, and Space technology. They will delve into how these innovations can address global challenges like climate change, social equity, and biodiversity loss. We warmly invite educators, community members, and industry professionals to join us on this exciting journey https://lnkd.in/g6ath5DZ

At the Liger Leadership Academy New Zealand we know that our Queenstown community is filled with amazing people who can enhance learning for our students. That's why we have welcomed 37 community members and industry experts in the first 44 school days of 2024, they have helped our learners acquire the knowledge they need, provided expertise, taught skills, given feedback, suggested new sources of information, helped to connect the dots, opened their networks to our learners, encouraged us to develop an entrepreneurial mindset, shared how they plan their projects, invited us to their workplaces and evaluated our learners' process and products. We are on track to achieve our goal of engaging 150 experts this year, it sure helps when our mission is to create impact in our community and we have a project, experiential and opportunity based approach to prepare our learners for the future. A huge thank you to everyone who has invested time and effort in making the learning real for our Liger Learners.

Liger Leadership Academy: First Term Done and Dusted! What an incredible first term it's been at Liger Leadership Academy New Zealand! With one day to go, I've been blown away by the energy, enthusiasm, and intellectual curiosity of our students that culminated in them showcasing their learning to our community at our Sharation event last night. To the Future! 🚀 I facilitated a term long Exploration for 13 students who delved deep into investigating what their future career will look like in the age of disruptive technologies. They explored emerging fields like AI, robotics, biotechnology, energy and tools of communication while researching potential career paths and the values and competencies needed to thrive. Their mahi was impressive - brimming with innovative ideas, critical thinking, and determination as they started a Young Enterprise business as well! To gain real-world insights, our students connected with a diverse range of industry experts. From tech entrepreneurs like Sam Ragnarsson to local business owners like Paul Wilson and Richard Chambers, each encounter opened their eyes to the vast possibilities that lie ahead. I have literally lost count of the number of experts that engaged with our learners in the last 10 weeks - somewhere north of 15! Special shout out to AJ Mason who was a constant guide for our learners. We also went on inspiring field trips, to look at how cutting-edge technology is impacting various sectors. Thanks to: - the awesome Mike Casey for hosting a visit to his 'electric' cherry orchard! 🍒 - the ingenious George Hayden at Focal engineering 🔧 - the amazing Jo Learmonth who took us behind the scenes at Queenstown Airport (ZQN)✈️. A Guiding Light 💡 We were stoked to welcome back Maurie Abraham to Liger this term. He hunkered down with Daniel Cooper and myself for an intense two day session this week on leadership and strategic planning. Without doubt the best professional learning I have experienced and his advice and guidance on our next steps in the development of our learning programme were invaluable. Maurie's visit reinforced our commitment to creating a learning environment that empowers young people to become the architects of a better tomorrow. The first term has been a whirlwind of learning, growth, and connection at Liger. We're incredibly excited to see what the rest of the year holds for our amazing students! • Exciting news out of the USC Rossier School of Education that has important implications for the design of middle and high schools. Engaging learners in civically minded educational approaches supports transcendent thinking and builds cognitive and emotional development. The research found that adolescents who are exposed to regular transcendent experiences can surpass the ordinary boundaries of cognition and emotion. They state, “The more a teen grappled with the bigger picture and tried to learn from the stories, the more that teen increased the coordination between brain networks over the next two years, regardless of their IQ or their socioeconomic status”. It’s great to see this study confirming what Liger Academy has known for a long time; that weaving transcendent dimensions into the fabric of learning creates extraordinary learning experiences, cultivates curiosity, and forges deeper connections through making deeper meaning of the social world. Liger Explorations, our impact projects, connect our learners with issues and people in the real world and have learners grappling with complex perspectives, stories and situations. This is just one way that we support our learner’s emerging capacity to make deep meaning of the world and self. Added bonus, we have seen a huge increase in passion, motivation and unity as our learners develop their civic mindedness and community leadership ability.  What does your school do to promote transcendent thinking? https://lnkd.in/gYzZyJPX
