After months of heavy lifting (literally!), the giant tower crane at Te Matapihi has completed its work and been removed ahead of schedule! 🙌🏗️🚧
Since June 2023, this crane has been busy lifting diggers, windows, and construction materials, sometimes lifting up to 8 tonnes at the Te Matapihi site! Dylan Keene, the crane operator, says working in the world's windiest city isn’t easy, but the view from up top is unbeatable. With views stretching from Te Ngākau Civic Square to the Southern Coast, Eastbourne, and Hutt Valley, it’s not your average office!
Dylan describes crane operating as “a bit like standing on a fence post with a fishing rod in your hands.” Handling Wellington’s famous wind wasn’t easy either. Dylan and his team had to carefully balance the crane and stabilise materials, like glass panes, with cables to make sure everything stayed safe. But despite the Welly wind, the team absolutely smashed it. Project Manager Stu Hercus says, “The team are up there with the best in the world.”
While the crane work may be done, the LT McGuinness Ltd. team won’t forget this project anytime soon. “We take a lot of pride in what we’ve done here,” Stu adds. “We’re not likely to see a project as complex as Te Matapihi again.”
Thanks for sticking with us, Wellington! We’re excited to continue working on Te Matapihi! 🚧👷♂️👷♀️
