It is great to see results from our environmental data science research published on Knowledge Auckland - Auckland Council’s collection of Auckland related published research, data, information, analysis and data about our communities, the economy and the Auckland environment. Reports from two of our recent collaborative projects with Zealandia Consulting Ltd are now available: https://lnkd.in/gfYitF-j This project uses high spatial and temporal resolution satellite imagery alongside machine learning techniques to identify “bare earth” and unsealed roads across the Auckland region. The model analysis defines areas of bare earth as gravel, exposed soil, and sand. https://lnkd.in/gcj6wVcn This report documents a GIS analysis specifically developed to identify potential sediment sources, exposure, and deposition, caused by the 2023 Cyclone Gabrielle, for five pilot catchments in the Auckland region. Thanks to Damian Young (Env Engineer and Entrepreneur) and his team at Zealandia Consulting plus all of the stakeholders at Auckland Council who assisted in these projects.

The Prism team hosted guests from agriculture, government, industry, technology, academia and more to an in-person launch event at the new BNZ Centre in Wellington this week.  A beautiful space, wide screen, canapes including fine product from Silver Fern Farms and a jazz band provided an intimate yet relaxing atmosphere for conversation. Managing Director Matt Lythe provided a short overview of the company heritage, vision, projects underway and plans for the future while the Prism Earth Ltd, Lynker Analytics and Silver Fern Farms Ltd team spent time interacting with the guests discussing the synergies and capabilities across the group and the exciting opportunities ahead. We also shared a new company video prepared by Tracta - Agrimarketing agency – which explains the mission and context for Prism – revealing insights for sustainable land use. This will be shared on our website soon. Thanks to Greg McSkimming for providing expert MC services, David Ingerson and Jonno Ingerson for the digital content, BlueCarrot for the catering and of course Bank of New Zealand for the amazing venue. #launched

Encouraging and motivating bright minds into applied AI is important to us at Lynker Analytics. In a continuation of our work in “AI for Education” with a focus on teaching the teachers we hosted more than 20 primary and intermediate school principals from across Wellington and Wairarapa last week at our Petone office. Our Wellington Data Science team led by David Knox and including Achim Gädke and Justin Larking explained the latest developments in AI and shared their unique pathway into this career. One of our youngest team members Maia Waipara also showcased our work using AI to map every building in NZ for Toitū Te Whenua Land Information New Zealand. We also had time to spotlight Peek Robotics with a tour of their lab from founder Gary Peek and a demo of Grover the adaptable robotics platform. Thanks to John Channer from Fraser Crescent School for facilitating. #ai4edu AI Forum NZ

The New Zealand government through Ministry for the Environment | Manatū mō te Taiao use the Land Use Carbon Analysis System (LUCAS) programme to quantify the greenhouse gas emissions and removals associated with land use change. The most important land use changes from an emissions perspective are afforestation and deforestation. For the most recent monitoring period Lynker Analytics was commissioned to field check over 7,000 distinct areas of potential forest loss. These areas ranged in size from 1 to 477 hectares and covered a total area larger than 60,000 hectares. This time we used satellite imagery from Maxar Technologies and Machine Learning (ML) to survey these areas with the data classified by our model into land cover sub-classes including cutover (debris left after harvest), new seedlings, pasture, and mature forest. Downstream of this we applied a rules based GIS analysis to assess deforestation status. This automated monitoring system is similar to the last two surveys we undertook using an aerial survey. This method again proved reliable in detecting deforestation, re-planting and other land cover changes exceeding one hectare.  Thanks to David Knox for outstanding technology design and implementation, Jithen S. at Eagle Technology for imagery tasking and technical support, and Deborah Burgess, Michael Cooper and Tom Argyle from the Carbon Sequestration team at Ministry for the Environment | Manatū mō te Taiao.

Lynker Analytics is excited to have been awarded a scientific research and consulting contract with National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Alaska Fisheries Science Center to develop a data processing pipeline for Zooplankton Images. This project is to be conducted for the Recruitment Processes Program (RPP) which has been testing camera systems for capturing zooplankton images and analysis methods for counting, enumerating and measuring zooplankton and fish eggs for a number of years. Their goal is to greatly expand data on zooplankton and fish eggs compared to what net sampling and human observers can accomplish.
