Congratulations to our partners at New Zealand King Salmon on the announcement of their $29m ‘Future Farming’ programme. It is a great example of how bold leadership, hardwork and collaboration are helping creating a future that ensures economic growth and environmental stewardship go hand in hand. We look forward to supporting this development through building a world-leading blue economy ecosystem here in Te Tauihu. Great work team! 👏
It was a privilege to host the Hon Todd McClay MP and the Hon Mark Patterson at our Tentburn facility on Monday. While it was great to show the Ministers and some Ministry for Primary Industries guests around our Tentburn facility, the real reason for the visit was to launch the ‘Future Farming: A Blueprint to Accelerate Salmon Farming in Aotearoa’ partnership programme under MPI’s SFF Futures Fund. Across its five-year duration, the ‘Future Farming’ programme will pilot the technologies that will provide the ‘blueprint’ for substantive and sustainable salmon farming growth in NZ, especially within new open ocean environments. The total programme has an expected value of $29 million, with an investment by the Government of up to $11.7m. This will be one of the highest-value investments made by SFF Futures since the fund was established in 2018. “The ‘Future Salmon Farming Programme’ will prove the viability of open ocean farming for the King Salmon species to make New Zealand a leading global supplier for this high value product,” - Hon Todd McClay. “This is another example of the Coalition Government’s commitment to growing the aquaculture industry and supporting innovation in the sector, to the benefit of all New Zealander,”- Hon Shane Jones. “With the NZ salmon sector poised to grow, the learnings from Blue Endeavour, and the associated technologies, should accelerate the pace of development of the sector and support this NZ Inc level blue economy opportunity – CEO NZKS Carl Carrington. With the right kind of action, investments, and thinking like this, we can: 🌊 deliver positive regional growth, 🌊 support and grow livelihoods, 🌊 produce even more delicious kai, and 🌊 drive high-value export growth and greater prosperity for Aotearoa NZ. We look forward to sharing more as this programme evolves. Read here for more information: 👇🏽 https://lnkd.in/eYYfassZ https://lnkd.in/e7fYNKm5

This week, Moananui welcomed the Parliamentary Primary Production Select Committee to Nelson for a day of exploring all things blue economy! 🌊 The morning provided a vantage point of the blue economy from on the water. During the vessel tour, our partner companies displayed the diversity and expertise of our ecosystem. Port Nelson Limited, Nelson Marina and Kernohan Engineering set the scene around infrastructure and service demands. Ngāti Rārua highlighted the importance of aquaculture to iwi intergenerational ambition. We visited MacLab (NZ) Ltd’s mussel farm and research site in Taman Bay to learn about aquaculture in practice, and even saw seeding operations underway. Seaweave, Pinpoint Earth and Cawthron Institute spoke about the importance of their industry partnerships and onsite trials that enable our rapidly growing bluetech industry. Over lunch we dove deep into the growth potential of the blue economy with New Zealand King Salmon and Westpac New Zealand. The afternoon highlighted the R&D essential for success, with visits to world leading facilities at The New Zealand Institute for Plant and Food Research Limited and Cawthron Institute Aquaculture Park. Mayors Tim King and Hon Dr Nick Smith joined us to wrap-up the day, reflecting on the importance of the blue economy to the region and New Zealand’s economic growth. The expertise and passion of our partners and breadth of opportunity available to NZ led to animated discussions about how we work together across public and private sectors to leverage the true potential of New Zealand’s blue economy. Huge thanks to the Committee members Mark Cameron, Miles Anderson, Steve Abel, Mike Butterick, Jo Luxton, Suze Redmayne, Cushla Tangaere-Manuel and Tangi Utikere for being so generous with your time and curiosity, and recognising that cross-party collaboration is critical to growing a blue economy for New Zealand.
