Wellingtonians know we’re at a high risk of hazards like earthquakes, tsunami and severe weather events. We know we should prepare for these events, so why don’t we? We’ll explore this question in our first ‘Active Land Talk’ series at Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa. Join experts from Massey University’s Joint Centre for Disaster Research, Dr Lauren Vinnell, Dr Catalina Miranda, and Associate Professor Julia Becker to discuss the psychology and behaviour of people and natural hazards. We’re pleased to bring this free public talk series in partnership with Te Papa. Over three Tuesdays in winter, we’ll be featuring expert insights into how science is helping prepare New Zealand for future natural hazards.

Scientists at GNS Science are listening to the hum of the earth for clues about how and where the Paeroa fault may rupture in the future. Using small and low-cost devices, the NHC-funded scientists are measuring how fast sound travels through the earth. Project leader Dr Brook Keats says this gives important insights into the fault’s inner workings: “If we know how deep the fault goes and on what angle, we can determine how big an area may rupture and what magnitude earthquakes it may trigger.” We’re funding this research to help build a better understanding of earthquake risk in the Waikato region. By knowing the risks, communities can better prepare for future eruptions.

In 1945 we were named the Earthquake and War Damage Commission, to provide affordable insurance to help communities recover from earthquakes.  Nearly 80 years on, we’ve changed our name several times and made big changes in other ways too. For the last 30 years we’ve been known as the Earthquake Commission, but the time has come for another change. This month we started a new chapter as the Natural Hazards Commission Toka Tū Ake. A little older, significantly wiser, and still committed to helping New Zealanders prepare for and recover from the impacts of natural hazards.
