The New Zealand China Council was established in 2012 and forms part of the NZ Inc China Strategy, launched by the Prime Minister in February 2012. The Council is a NZ led and funded organisation, which acts as a cross-sector peak body for the relationship.

It's been a whirlwind few days in Shanghai this week connecting with New Zealand businesses here for CIIE. Signing ceremonies, product launches, economic briefings and networking with Chinese partners have all been on the agenda, topped off with a big day yesterday with Minister Todd McCLay visiting the Taste New Zealand pavilion and independent New Zealand exporters sites. Our Chair John McKinnon and Council members Richard Pollock Cleo Gilmour and Alexandra Badley have rounded out their time in Hangzhou and Shanghai this week with a packed programme including visits to: - Alibaba Group's new green campus in Hangzhou, for an update on e-commerce and other consumption trends across the company's multiple subsidiaries; - CHINT Global, a large solar energy manufacturer and installer, to understand this fast-growing Chinese sector and what it offers for New Zealand's decarbonisation strategy; - New Zealand Central, our government's purpose-built kiwi hub in downtown Shanghai, for an Economist Intelligence: EIU briefing on China's economy and a ministerial welcome event for NZ exporters attending CIIE hosted by Ardi Barnard 鲍晓笛 Andrew White Steve Jones and the New Zealand Consulate-General team in Shanghai; - A business breakfast hosted by New Zealand Business Roundtable in China (NZBRiC) for NZ trade minister Todd McClay and NZ exporters; and - The China International Import Expo (CIIE) itself - 3,500 exhibitors from 129 countries, with New Zealand's strongest China exporters on full display including our Council members Fonterra, Zespri International and Meat Industry Association of New Zealand and its members. 9 New Zealand companies have been involved in a special New Zealand-China business partnership signing ceremony, supported by NZTE, to mark the Minister for Trade’s visit to the China International Import Expo (CIIE) in Shanghai this week. Close to 60 NZ companies are exhibiting at CIIE this year – the most since the event began in 2018. We're back in China! Our Chair John McKinnon is in Shanghai, Hangzhou and Beijing on 4-8 November accompanied by three of our Council members Richard Pollock, Cleo Gilmour and Alexandra Badley. The goals of the visit are to: - Support the visit to China by New Zealand's trade and agriculture minister Todd McClay; - Work with the 50+ New Zealand companies attending this year's massive China International Import Expo (CIIE) in Shanghai; - Take the temperature of China's domestic economy and consumer confidence, catch up with latest market trends and tech advances (China never stands still); - Hear first-hand reactions in China to the outcome of the US election; - Discuss NZ-China and regional issues with senior government officials; and - Keep our great relationships going with our key local partner organisations and institutes. What we did on Day 1: - A CIIE briefing in Shanghai with the trade minister and NZ business leaders including our Council members Fran O'Sullivan Sirma Karapeeva and Nathan Flowerday; - A discussion with an innovative local travel agency on China's outbound tourism sector: how is New Zealand regarded as a destination post-Covid, how have travellers' tastes changed, and do people have money to travel right now? - A visit to Zhejiang Dafeng, a cultural tech, design and event management company in Hangzhou city, which has a close collaboration with another Council member Sir Richard Taylor at Wētā Workshop Ltd. Amongst other things they collaborated to transform the retail experience at the world’s largest duty-free shopping complex in Haikou, Hainan Island into a multisensory, immersive journey. China’s evolving demographics and consumer behaviours are reshaping the demand for animal protein accoring to a recent report from Rabobank. Here’s what’s driving the shift: 𝗔𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗼𝗽𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗦𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗿 𝗛𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗱𝘀: China has an aging population and a falling birthrate. The change in demographics is shifting demand for protein types and cooking priorities: 👵 Elderly consumers are seeking easy-to-digest protein options like poultry (rather than the traditional pork). 👫 For working households, having fewer (or no) children is shifting the cooking priorities toward convenience and value rather than the often cited 'safety and health.' 𝗦𝗮𝘃𝘃𝘆 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀, 𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗡𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗹𝘁𝘆: 🍣 Though consumers are value-conscious, they’re still willing to spend on food that brings value through convenience (think pre-sliced cuts or pre-packaged meals), experience, or added health. 🥘 Consumers are more open to novel ways of cooking and seek a wider variety of flavours. This goes for social and ecommerce-savvy aging populations too. 𝗩𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲 𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗩𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗺𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗹𝘆 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀: There’s a pivot towards premium cuts and ready-meals as suppliers respond to evolving consumer demands. 🚛 The market is consolidating, leading to more vertically integrated supply chains. 🔬 Being closer to the consumer allows brands to be more reactive to trends and have faster NPD. 📹 Companies who shied away from live streaming are now leveraging the opportunity to educate consumers on a new cooking method while driving sales. 🇳🇿 𝗙𝗼𝗿 𝗡𝗭 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗶𝗻 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗲𝗿𝘀: New Zealand, positioned at the commodity end of the protein market, needs to consider how to appeal to these trends and who is capturing the most value in supply chains. Congratulations to The Asia New Zealand Foundation Te Whītau Tūhono on 30 years of helping New Zealanders to better understand and connect with Asia. This week’s 2024 Asia Summit underlined why New Zealand has to keep deepening engagement with the region, its opportunities and its challenges. Unsurprisingly, China came up in almost every panel. We acknowledge the Foundation’s active but ultimately unsuccessful work to invite a Chinese panellist to New Zealand to join the discussions - and congratulate the insightful participants from Southeast Asia, India, Australia, Europe, the US and of course New Zealand. That's a wrap on the Asia Summit 2024! 🌟 From geopolitics to media to sports, we covered it all! What a dynamic day full of important discussions and insights. It was great to have government officials, dignitaries, business leaders, and a wide range of Asia experts as part of the conversation. We were pleased to conclude the Summit with an address from the Minister of Foreign Affairs Winston Peters, reflecting on the past 30 years of Asia-New Zealand relations and the Asia New Zealand Foundation. The reception following the summit was a wonderful celebration of the Foundation’s 30th anniversary, featuring a special address by guest speaker Dr Michael Fullilove, Executive Director of the Lowy Institute, who shared observations on the New Zealand-Australia-Asia dynamic—similarities, differences, and opportunities. A big thank you to all our speakers from the day and to everyone who joined us! It was wonderful to bring together so many stakeholders and the wider Foundation whānau to celebrate 30 years of the Asia New Zealand Foundation Te Whītau Tūhono.
The New Zealand China Council Te Kaunihera O Aotearoa me Haina welcomes incoming National President of the New Zealand Chinese Association (NZCA) Paul Chin as an ex officio member. Paul was elected as National President in July 2024, succeeding Jenny Too who resigned from the Council when she completed her own three-year term leading NZCA. In addition to his national role, Paul serves as President of the Waikato Chinese Association and is a former trustee and chair of the Chinese Poll Tax Heritage Trust. Welcoming Paul to the New Zealand China Council, Chair John McKinnon acknowledged the importance of the New Zealand Chinese Association’s involvement in our work.
