The Sponge Project Tour set in motion by the Auckland Branch of NZILA in October was an all-round success. The end-of-week road trip on Friday 18 October to five sites involved taking a busload of 30 landscape architects and students around five exemplary ‘Sponge City’ project sites, disembarking at each for a short talk-and-walk before returning to the starting point of Wynyard Quarter. It provided participants with firsthand insights into Auckland’s vulnerability to flooding and city-improving responses. The tour also included a friendly photo competition. Architecture and Planning
NZILA represents a passionate design profession that combines art and science to create places and spaces for people.
About us
The New Zealand Institute of Landscape Architects Tuia Pito Ora (NZILA) is the internationally recognised professional body of qualified landscape architects in New Zealand. Landscape architects are academically qualified professionals who focus upon landscapes, how people interact with them, and how landscapes can be enhanced through design. Essentially this includes ‘everything outside’ - urban and rural - at the interface between people and natural systems. From masterplanning Olympic sites, planning and managing landscapes such as national parks and wetlands, assessing or analysing the landscape, undertaking landscape and project management, or designing private gardens; landscape architecture nurtures communities and helps create more liveable environments. NZILA's primary purpose is to promote the profession of landscape architecture throughout New Zealand, and to assist members in improving their general and technical knowledge through Conferences and a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programme.

Our Chair Debbie Tikao, had the honour of representing Tuia Pito Ora New Zealand Institute of Landscape Architects at the 60th IFLA World Congress in Istanbul earlier this month. The event, centered around the theme Code Red for Earth!, facilitated a global exchange of knowledge, ideas, and experiences. Ashleigh Ward from WSP also attended as an invited speaker, sharing her insights on Te Ao Māori and how Indigenous perspectives can guide pathways toward a more resilient future. Debbie presented on the Te Kori a te Kō climate change program in Akaroa Harbour, showcasing an inspiring example of mana whenua-led climate action. Both Debbie and Ashleigh took part in panel discussions—Debbie on Bridging the Divide: Collaborative Design for a Planet in Crisis and Ashleigh on Weaving Cultural Threads into a Sustainable Tapestry: Cultural Landscapes, Natural Heritage Planetary Rights—contributing valuable perspectives to the ongoing conversation on global sustainability. Debbie says she was energized by the many insightful presentations at the Congress, particularly the work of the UNEP Cities Unit, which offers invaluable support for governments and professionals in developing nature-based solutions. We would also like to mention Dr. Bruno Marques our esteemed IFLA President and Tuia Pito Ora whānau whose dedication and energy for the global landscape architecture profession are truly inspirational. His vision and leadership played a pivotal role in the success of the IFLA 60th World Congress, and the entire event is a testament to his drive and commitment to advancing the profession on a global scale. #ClimateAction #IndigenousKnowledge #LandscapeArchitecture #IFLA60
