Seven is a lucky number for many people – but perhaps on this occasion not so much for New Zealand’s criminals. Seven new patrol dog teams are active in their districts – from Tāmaki Makaurau in the north to Canterbury in the south – after completing their training at the Dog Training Centre at Trentham. The handlers – including three first-timers - celebrated their success in front of whānau, friends, colleagues and Police Executive members at their graduation ceremony on 3 October 🐾🎓 Congratulations to all our new patrol dog teams! Marie Storey is a remarkable former policewoman who celebrated her 103rd birthday on Monday (7 October) 💐💙 The Wellington Retired Police Members Club surprised Marie with flowers to celebrate her major milestone at their regular October lunch meeting. As well as being one of the superstars of the 2016 celebrations of the 75th anniversary of women in Police, Marie has attended recruit graduations at the Royal New Zealand Police College and helped inspire ongoing generations of women in blue. Marie was inspired to join Police when her police officer father came home one day in August 1941 and told her he had seen history being made with the swearing-in of the first intake of women. She was one of 14 women who entered training 1943 in the third intake. She was posted to Wellington Central, where she was attached to the detective branch. Read more here - https://lnkd.in/gxtq-BGv

Two people were successfully rescued overnight following a report that the pair did not return from a kayaking trip in Queenstown. At around 11pm, Police were notified of two people missing after going to Lake Whakatipu for their trip. Otago Lakes Central Acting Area Commander, Senior Sergeant Fiona Roberts says, “Police Land Search and Rescue, Coastguard Queenstown, and two rescue helicopters were deployed to search for the pair. “They were located on the shore in the early hours of this morning, in a good condition. “While it is fortunate this incident was resolved successfully, this is one of the four recent Search and Rescue incidents in the last week in the Southern District, with one other involving kayaks and two with dangerous high rivers,” says Senior Sergeant Roberts. On 8 October, one person died following a water-related incident in Milford Sound, Southland after a report of two people needing assistance while kayaking. Police would like to use these incidents as a reminder for people to ensure they’re prepared when going out on a trip in the outdoors, especially in the water. Police urge anyone going near waters, no matter the skill level, to take the basic precautions to keep themselves safe in case something goes wrong. Always wear a lifejacket. If you get into trouble and are wearing a lifejacket, your chances of survival are much greater. Have a form of waterproof communication with you or use a waterproof bag to put your phone in, to put inside your lifejacket. A registered personal locator beacon is the lifeline when in a life-threatening situation. It provides us with the essential information that can help us get to you. New Zealand weather is unpredictable and could change at any moment, check the forecast and change your plans if needed. Tell someone where you are going and when you will come back – this can be crucial information for us to locate you. Take care of yourself and look out for each other, pack warm clothes and extra food, and take breaks often. Personal locator beacons can be hired for as little as $10 from many Department of Conservation Visitor Centres and outdoor tramping and hunting stores. If you have purchased a beacon, make sure you register it at www.beacons.org.nz. For more information on outdoor safety, helpful free resources and videos, head to https://lnkd.in/giT6t7q9.

A joint Customs and Police operation has swooped on New Zealand’s second largest importation of methamphetamine, concealed in steel beams. Both agencies descended on a rural Waikato property in darkness early on Friday morning, with two men visiting from Australia being arrested in the process of deconstructing the beams. Under Operation Girder, Police’s National Organised Crime Group (NOCG) have worked alongside Customs to identify the group responsible, with warrants being executed across Auckland and the Waikato over recent days. All up five men, aged between 31 and 51, have been arrested. All initially appeared in the Auckland District Court on Friday, facing charges relating to the importation and supply of methamphetamine. Waikato Police recently ran a training day for Community Patrollers from across the Waikato District. This training was the first of its kind in the Waikato. Community Patrols of New Zealand - CPNZ and Police have a nationwide MOU that supports volunteers from the community to act as the additional ‘eyes and ears’ for the Police, particularly during times that Police have identified as higher risk. CPNZ volunteers have a passion for community safety and service, along with a desire to be of support and assistance to Police. The aim of the training was to help strengthen our partnership, build confidence and support volunteers in police procedures and patrolling. Thank you so much for all you do in our communities 👏
