About us

New Zealand Certified Builders is a membership organisation set up by a group of trade qualified builders in 1998. These builders, led by Tauranga’s Craig Wilkinson, wanted to create a group that would protect homeowners from unqualified builders and unethical practices and promote excellence in building standards. An industry leader, NZCB has an extensive membership of builders throughout New Zealand proudly carrying the NZCB stamp of approval. Each builder is trade qualified with a strong history of stability and success. Not only are homeowners guaranteed first-class knowledge and expertise when working with an NZCB approved builder, each home is covered by New Zealand’s Halo 10 year residential guarantee for peace of mind throughout the building journey. How NZCB operates NZCB operates in accordance with the Incorporated Societies Act 1908. The affairs of NZCB are governed by a constitution and managed by a Board of 4 Directors, including Chairman, as well as up to two additional Directors. The Chief Executive attends all Board meetings as a non-voting participant. The policy of the Board is carried out by a management team lead by the CE and his staff. Who can join NZCB? If you’re a New Zealand builder who’s passionate about providing superior workmanship and meets the NZCB membership criteria, welcome aboard. The first requirement is to hold a recognised trade qualification equivalent to or better than National Trade Certificate in Carpentry Level 4. To ensure our high standards are maintained, we also take into account a builder’s history of stability and success, continued solvency, absence of complaints by customers and suppliers, a good untarnished reputation and brand, and consistently high standards.

  • NZCB In The News – 23 October 2024 – Business Desk New insulation standards to avoid being rolled back – industry sources New home insulation standards are likely to be fine-tuned, rather than rolled back, Business Desk understands. Building and Construction Minister Chris Penk was considering scrapping upgrades to glazing and insulation requirements brought in last year, amid reports they increase building costs and cause overheating in some homes, RNZ reported this year. While some builders welcomed the news, most in the construction industry, as well as health experts and environmentalists, expressed dismay at the prospect of reverting to previous standards. • NZCB In The News – 1 November 2024 – Build 204    What do we mean by vocational education? Malcolm Fleming, New Zealand Certified Builders Association Chief Executive, says vocational training needs to embrace not just the delivery of technical skills but the deeper education necessary to create successful business people. New Zealand’s vocational education system has been through a series of upheavals in recent years, and more change is on the way. Minister Simmonds has put forward some major proposals focusing on core qualifications, how they are delivered and who creates the content and administers the delivery. Getting these details right is clearly important, but not enough attention is being paid to the question of what comes next for a learner who has graduated with their base qualification.  Click Below To Read More https://lnkd.in/gcUJpR6X

  • NZCB In The News – 24 October 2024 - The Post  Is the grass really greener for construction workers in Australia? Kiwi construction workers looking to move to Australia for greater opportunities may not get the big financial boost they expect, a new report shows. The prospect of higher wages across the Tasman has always been a lure. Now, weak economic growth and limited job vacancies in New Zealand have led to a record number of people heading to Australia. But a new report from the Construction and Infrastructure Workforce Development Council showed the disparity in construction incomes was shrinking, and in some roles there was no longer a big difference. • NZCB In The News – 14 October 2024 – NZ Herald Building a house in New Zealand is 50% more expensive than in Australia. But Malcolm Fleming, chief executive of the country's other major industry group, New Zealand Certified Builders, is cautious about opening the floodgates to overseas materials. Builders and designers were risk-averse and defaulted to tried and true methods and products for good reason, he said. Click Below To Read More https://lnkd.in/gVZRDc3C

  • NZCB In The News - 9 October 2024 - Newstalk ZB (Auckland) Government Looking at the Building Sector Government are looking at the cowboys in the building sector and the current maximum fine for individual builders. If you're a bit shonky its $10,000. The plan is to bump that to 50, for companies it's going to be $150,000. Certified builders CEO Malcolm Fleming talking with us on this. Malcolm, is this a very obvious problem that needs solving with a big fine? "I think it's important to note that careless workmanship by trade qualified builders is rare and the trade qualification for building for builders is important. It's been a requirement of NZCB membership since we started in 1998. It's a prerequisite, it's unique to us and we're pleased that the government is signalling that it's looking to follow our lead with occupational licencing" says Malcolm. • NZCB In The News – The Press – 17 September 2024 Fears of thousands in extra insulation costs unfounded, new research finds Improved insulation standards have come under the Government’s cost-cutting radar, but they do not add the thousands of dollars to building costs originally claimed, new research reveals. Changes to clause H1 of the Building Code, which regulates the energy efficiency of buildings, were introduced in May 2023 and came into force in November. The upgrades to insulation and glazing requirements were the biggest in over a decade, according to the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE), and were aimed at reducing the cost of heating a new home by 40%.
