A Customs team has joined more than 450 New Zealand personnel in Samoa for the high-profile Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), which has seen heads of state and thousands of dignitaries arrive into Apia. It is the first Pacific Island nation to host the event, which is also the first that King Charles III has attended as Head of the Commonwealth. Prior to the event we supported Samoa Customs by providing new wireless radio units and systems and new uniforms for Customs staff, implemented training across a range of airport entry and departure processes, and also took part in a multi-agency leadership refresher workshop. During the event we are assisting with the arrival of VIPs and support personnel, who are arriving in a mix of military, private, charter and commercial aircraft. The staff we deployed all have either family connections or other links to Samoa that give them valuable local know-how. We are pleased that our people can help our border partners in Samoa ensure this major international event is a success.

New Zealand Customs Joint Border Analytics Manager Wei Jiat-Tan said, "The Asia Pacific region faces complex challenges from the evolving threat of transnational organised crime. 🐾"When Yetta first arrived from Australia we bonded instantly," says Handler Luke. "Not only is she an outstanding companion at work, she has also brought a lot of love and fun into our home all thanks to the fantastic start in life she has had growing up with the Browne family. Their hard work, dedication, and passion as a foster family is evident in Yetta’s development and success here in New Zealand. I can’t thank them enough for the vital role they play in protecting our borders, and it was a privilege to meet the family in person and see for myself the bond that they created with Yetta when they reunited."
How far would you go for your four-legged heroes? For the Browne family, nowhere is too far! 🐾 Since 2021, ABF Foster Carers, Frances and Declan Browne, along with their daughter Amelia, have opened their hearts and home to four ABF bred dogs. Right now, they're caring for Chief and puppy Yodes. But recently, Declan and Amelia hopped across the Tasman to New Zealand to cheer on their former foster pup, Yetta, as she graduated with New Zealand Customs Service. Talk about going the extra mile! From family cuddles to sniffing out trouble, our dogs are loved every step of the way, getting all the care they need to become confident detector dogs. These hairy heroes are making a difference, one paw at a time. And it's all thanks to incredible foster families like the Brownes. A joint Customs and NZ Police operation has swooped on New Zealand’s second largest importation of methamphetamine, concealed in steel beams. Customs located the concealment of 515 kilograms of methamphetamine within the hefty steel beams in early September, after being sent from the United States. Under Operation Girder, Police’s National Organised Crime Group (NOCG) have worked alongside Customs to identify the group responsible, with warrants being executed across Auckland and the Waikato over recent days. All up five men have been arrested and are facing charges relating to the importation and supply of methamphetamine. “Customs’ intelligence gathering and targeting have played a critical role in detecting this smuggling attempt and identifying people responsible,” Customs’ Group Manager Intelligence, Investigations and Enforcement, Terry Brown, says. Read more: https://lnkd.in/gwQ2iGXi Anyone with suspicions about possible smuggling should contact Crime Stoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or Customs confidentially on 0800 WE PROTECT (0800 937 768).
