Our CEO, Dave Tilton, had the privilege of attending and presenting at the International Road Federation (IRF) - Official World Congress 2024 in Istanbul. The event highlighted crucial issues, from the urgent need for transportation sustainability to the increasing diversity of transport modes available to society. Particularly, iRAP’s work and, separately, the launch of the international register of Road Safety Auditors were particularly inspiring. There is much to take forward in making roads—and work zones—safer for everyone.

As it comes towards its conclusion, it's time for a report from the International Road Federation (IRF) World Congress 2024 in Istanbul. Firstly, well done IRF - exceptional event (and of course, wonderfully hosted by the city of Istanbul). This has been an enlightening and meaningful experience, lots of insights - but here's a few selected reflections: 1. Sustainability featured - and rightly so. The implications of climate change are wide reaching and catastrophic. The multi-dimensional costs of climate impact, and resilience for transport is monstrous. We lose focus on this and seem to forget its significance in our daily action. This event promoted this necessity extensively. 2. Transport research is strong and generative. Work zone safety research is not. Work zone harm makes up approximately 2% of transport harm (and in some territories that has increased by >50% in the last decade). The more infrastructure we build, the more work zones we will need. This discipline lacks sophistication and iteration. The good evidence and research we do have doesn’t make it to the front line. An example is guidance developed for Qatar which is aspirational and valuable, but its benefits are yet to be fully operationalised. Work as imagined not yet being done. 3. iRAP get a special mention because they are an exceptional and transformational organisation making roads safer. Greg - excellent presentations and application of science to real world problems. My PhD research seeks to explore a similar framework for Work Zone safety and i'm looking forward to exploring that further in due course. 4. The 10-step plan for Safer Road Infrastructure is an exceptional (and award winning) programme of work. International Road Federation (IRF) - how about a similar framework for improving work zone safety so the process of getting to safer roads is safe too? 5. The milestone of an International Registry of Road Safety Auditors is significant. Good road safety needs good assurance and credible intellect. Well done Eur Ing Miguel-Angel Serrano Santos & Francisco Javier López Delgado (and others). 6. It was a privilege to present work zone research in this forum, especially concerning vulnerable road users. But this is just the tip of the iceberg. Transport systems across the globe aspire to be safe, sustainable, resilient, and efficient. In the process of getting there - we need better safety performance from work zones. We need standards that have utility in developing countries, access to better performing temporary control measures, and better capability from local workforces to make building infrastructure a safe and collaborative process. The World Bank / Christopher Bennett and many others have done meaningful work in this space - but as with anything, we can do better. #IRFWorldCongress2024 #IRF2024 #workzonesafety #temporarytrafficmanagement

NZTA are Discontinuing Most CoPTTM Warrants – What You Need to Know From 1st November 2024, NZTA will no longer issue most CoPTTM warrants. If you're an employer or an individual holding TTM qualifications, it's important to understand how this affects you. Employers: • NZTA Warrants End on 1st November. Most TTM-related warrants, like TMO and STMS, will no longer be issued by NZTA. • Unit Standards Continue. Existing unit standards remain available and can provide credible evidence of some competencies, but should be integrated into a broader competency framework tailored to your business. • Competency Tracking. Employers should focus on tracking and validating staff competencies for specific road environments (Category A, B, or C). Talk to Parallaxx about setting up systems to manage this. • Refresher Plans. Ensure ongoing competency by implementing your own refresher systems—unit standards can still be obtained and Parallaxx will be offering TTM-specific refresher courses, with unit standards (where possible), including knowledge on the risk-based approach to TTM. Individuals: • Warrants End, Unit Standards Remain. If you need TMO or STMS qualifications, you can still obtain the corresponding unit standards through Parallaxx after 1st November. If you’ve previously trained with Parallaxx and didn’t request the unit standard, get in touch to register it. • STMS Qualifications. Remember, STMS NP and P unit standards don’t differentiate between Category A, B, or C road environments. Work with your employer to ensure competency in the environments you work in. • Refreshers: All Parallaxx refresher courses will include unit standards wherever possible. If your qualification is expiring soon, make sure unit standards are part of your refresher plan. For more information, read the detailed post here https://lnkd.in/gvAx65dZ View the official NZTA announcement here. https://lnkd.in/g3MhjR5G Contact Parallaxx: 0800 333 772 training@parallaxx.co.nz
