BUILDING RESILIENT FOUNDATIONS We have been busy building a deep resilient foundation for the newly reopened Tipene St Stephens School south of Auckland. The foundation was required to mitigate the risk of soil consolidation and provide tension uplift resistance. Project Manager Alex Hunger said Piletech screw piles were the ideal solution for the 138m long and 30m wide Canadian supplied Sprung Structure. “Encountering some difficult ground conditions at the site was challenging,” Alex said. “I’m proud of the way we used engineering nous to overcome this and keep the build on programme. Our site team adapted well to the site conditions and worked methodically every step of the way”. Piletech presented a case study on the project to consultants Kirk Roberts and GHD in Auckland and online across the country.

UNDERPINNING DISTINCTION Piletech’s team has delivered 75 screw piles to underpin the new Distinction Hotel Carpark being built in Invercargill. Project Manager Alex Hunger says the team installed the 273mm screw piles to a depth of 7.6m below ground level over 21 days. “Piletech was invited to tender for the project off the back of completing the HWR tower in Invercargill in 2020,” Alex said. “The very dense gravels at Invercargill are a risk for all pile types and Piletech are able to use our proprietary predrilling equipment to get the piles to depth.” “Piletech and our pile designer Natasha Jokhan provided a static load test and design services only to the Distinction Hotel in 2023 to permit the work to be consented.”

A Piletech team has delivered seven piles to work as tie back anchors for Brian Perry Civil’s C2-C3 Stormwater Outfall Project in Cambridge. The outfall structure is being built to take stormwater from future developments. With a significant drop from the outlet where it meets the Waikato River, a sheet pile platform was constructed into the river to work off and to hold back the water. Screw piles were used for the tieback anchors to support the wall during excavation of the riverbed. Piletech Project Engineer James Welsh said the job involved installing seven starters that were 4.75m long and up to six 2m extensions on each starter. “All piles were then tension tested for sign off.” BPC’s team installed 3m long boss pipe sockets into the platform, allowing the Piletech team to work above in a very tight space.
